Lymington
(SR/BR: 1938-1961)
132.2 ft long - 275 grt - 11 knots - 400 passengers - 20 cars
Lymington was delivered to the Southern Railway by William Denny of Dumbarton in 1938, for the Yarmouth-Lymington service. She pioneered the use of Voith-Schneider propulsion units on a ferry. Not surprisingly, they were quite troublesome initially. In 1947 she passed to British Railways (British Transport Commission). In 1974 Lymington was withdrawn and sold to Western Ferries for their Gourock-Dunoon service (to be followed by the next two Yarmouth car ferries
Farringford
and
Freshwater
).

Farringford
was sold to Western Ferries for use on their Gourock-Dunoon route. Sold in 1984, she was broken up in Hull.

Cuthred
(Sealink: 1969-1989)
59.77 m long - 704 grt - 400 passengers - 48 cars - Paxman English Electric diesels 756 hp - 10 knots
Cuthred
was built in 1969 by Richards Shipbuilders in Lowestoft. Although acting as a prototype of sorts for the later C-Class car ferries,
Cuthred
was reputedly not liked due to being underpowered, with a speed of only 10 knots. She ran on the Portsmouth-Fishbourne route for Sealink until 1984 when ownership passed to Sea Containers. She was laid up in 1986, but not sold until 1989 when bought by Open Leisure for use on the Tyne. She was rnamed
Clemtyne
. She was never used, and was resold in 1990 to Transado (Transportes Fluvias do Sardo s.a.r.d.) of Portugal for use between Setubal and Tróia as the
Mira Praia
.
