Isle of Wight
Sunday 17th June 2007
These photos were taken on a spontaneous day trip to the Isle of Wight on Sunday 17th June 2007. The initial intention was just to travel to Ryde by hovercraft, in the hope that we might travel on the new
Solent Express
. The Hover Rover ticket (hovercraft return plus unlimited travel on Southern Vectis buses) was good value for a group, so we purchased these with the intention of travelling on the circular open-topped bus tour from Ryde. Outward travel was on the hovercraft
Freedom 90
.
Solent Express
was out of use at Ryde.
No open-topped buses were available for service at Ryde that day, so since we had to travel on a normal bus we decided to travel to Yarmouth via Newport on routes 9 and 7. It was some time since I had visited Newport, the central transport hub of the island. Newport previously had a large bus station, and I wondered it it has succumbed to redevelopment like so many town bus stations. This was partly true, but to my surprise it also had a stylish
new bus station
.
On arrival at Yarmouth we ate at Salty's, promising fresh local fish. The food was good, but the service from the sullen overworked staff was poor. I then photographed the extremely attactive pier and three
Wighlink
ferries, which are due to be replaced by new ships. I missed getting pictures of any of the local excursion boats on the move however.
Temptress
was in the harbour, but I was on the return bus when the
Island Princess
of Puffin Cruises arrived.
We returned by bus to Ryde, and were pleased to see that
Solent Express
was now in service for our return trip - she had been in revenue service for just over a week.

GH2142 - Solent Express
(BHT130 - Hovertravel: 2007- )
Solent Express
has been designed and built by associated company Hoverwork. She is a diesel-powered hovercraft providing 36 extra seats compared to previous fleet members
Freedom 90
of and
Island Express
. After a lengthy development phase, she arrived at Ryde in March 2007 to undertake sea trials. She entered revenue service on 8th June 2007 and I travelled on her on Sunday 17th June. She is very noticeably quieter from outside and much more spacious inside. Having travelled out on
Freedom 90
, I thought the new craft had a slightly 'hard' ride in comparison, but this may just be an initial impression.
