Gosport Queen

Despite the arrival of the two new ferries, the older Gosport Queen and Portsmouth Queen continued to maintain the ferry service for many months during most of the day, with Spirit of Gosport often covering during peak periods. At this time Spirit of Portsmouth was reserved mainly for cruises. This September visit was the last time I saw Gosport Queen and Portsmouth Queen in service together - on subsequent visits the new ferries were running all services. I believe that Gosport Queen has since been withdrawn, with Portsmouth Queen remaining as spare vessel. For 2007 the number of cruises has been reduced substantially.

Spithead

The Spithead forts were built in the Solent in the 1860's to protect Portsmouth from bombardment from the sea, at the same time as the Gosport and Portsdown land forts were built. Horse Sands, No Mans Land and St Helens Forts were built 1865-80, and Spitbank was started 2 years later. Ryde Fort was abandoned shortly after construction started because of unstable foundations. Horse Sands and No Mans Land are identical at 200 foot in diameter and fully armour plated. The other 2 are slightly smaller at 150 foot diameter with iron plating on the front only.

Royal Navy

Illustrious (R06)

Only one of the Royal Navy's aircraft carriers is operational as a Strike Carrier at any time. Illustrious assumed the role of fleet flagship in June 2005 when Ark Royal went for refit at Rosyth where she received a new mizzen mast visible at the end of the island structure and was converted to operate in both the Strike Carrier and Landing Platform Helicopter (LPH) roles. Ark Royal completed this refit at the end of 2006 and was commissioned to act as an LPH whilst the Ocean is at refit (so both carriers are in operational use in 2007). The third carrier Invincible was decommissioned in July 2005 and was placed in Extended Readiness at Portsmouth until 2010, when she is likely to be disposed of.

Almirante Cochrane
ex-Norfolk (F230)

On November 22nd 2006, Chile officially received the former Royal Navy frigate Norfolk, renamed Almirante Cochrane. The vessel is the first of three former Royal Navy Type-23 frigates to be handed over to Chile, under a £134 million pound sales agreement signed in September 2005. The two other frigates (former HM Ships Grafton and Marlborough will join their sister ship in the Chilean Navy in 2008.

HM Ships Norfolk, Grafton and Marlborough were declared surplus to Royal Navy requirements as a result of force level adjustments announced in 2004. BAE Systems was appointed as the prime contractor for the refurbishment and reactivation work, bringing the vessels up to the Chilean Navy’s requirements. This transfer of the three Type 23 Frigates is the second major purchase of former British assets by Chile since 2000. The first stage in modernising Chile’s fleet was the acquisition of the Type 22 frigate HMS Sheffield in 2003, following her retirement from Royal Navy service.
