Grenå-Hundested Line
Juelsminde-Kalundborg Line
Jydsk Faergefart A/S

This page is devoted to postcards of ferry companies which crossed the Kattegat between Sjælland and Jutland, both parts of Denmark. Separate pages show the ferries of Mols Line and DSB (Danish State Railways) which also operated routes across the Kattegat.

An alphabetical list of ships covered on this page is shown below. The Table beneath gives links to complete postcard history pages on selected individual ships. Below the table are official postcards of the fleet in alphabetical order.

Grenå-Hundested Line commenced Kattegat operations in 1934 with the first Djursland, a small stern-loading car ferry. A second ferry Isefjord was added in 1935, and she remains in service in 2002 for Linee Lauro out of Naples. The route reopened after WW2 with a series of modern car ferries.

Juelsminde-Kalundborg Line began Kattegat operations in 1964, with the ferries Julle (1) and Kalle (1). Collaboration between the Juelsminde-Kalundborg Line and the Grenå-Hundested Line began in 1967, and they combined in 1970 to form Jydsk Færgefart A/S.

The rival Kattegat operator Mols Line (owned by DFDS) began its Ebeltoft-Odden service in 1966. Following the decrease in traffic after the 1974 oil crisis, there was insufficient traffic for the three Kattegat routes (excluding state-owned DSB). Cooperation between Jydsk Færgefart and Mols Line began in 1979, and part of the agreement was that Grenå-Hundested Line services would be maintained by only one ship. In 1983, DFDS took over 83% of shares in Grenå-Hundested Line, including the ferry Djursland. Passenger services on the Juelsminde-Kalundborg route ceased in 1983. Following the DFDS financial crisis of 1984, Grenå-Hundested Line and Mols Line were both sold to J.Lauritzen (and for the first time in its history, DFDS ran no domestic Danish services). In 1988, ownership of both lines passed to DIFKO (Dansk Investeringsfond), and the Grenå-Hundested route ceased in 1992. In 1999, Scandlines Danmark A/S (the successor to DSB) acquired a 40% in Mols Line and their Kattegat services were integrated, Mols Line taking over the Scandlines Cat-Link route.

Grenå (GHL: 1964-71)
Kalle (2) (JKL: 1972-74)

Grenå was one of two sisters (the other being the Hundested), delivered in 1964. In 1971 she was transferred to the Juelsminde-Kalundborg Line as Kalle. In 1975 both sisters were sold to Ole Lauritzen for use on his Olau Line service between Sheerness and Vlissingen, as Olau East and Olau West. Olau East was sold to Venezuelan interests within a year (she was scrapped in 1985), but Olau West continued until sold in 1977 to Corsica Ferries as Corsica Marina. She served with them for 14 years, followed by 9 years as the Kelibia. Initial owners were Accurate Shipping, who used her for services between Italy and Tunisia. From 1996, her owners were described as Kelibia Shipping, operating between Spain and Morocco. Between 2000/2001 she was owned by Etruria Ferries, as Nortia and was scheduled to operate between Livorno and Elba. However, she did not operate on the day that I visited, although she was manoeuvred twice by tugs across the harbour and back. Etruria Ferries were not listed in guides for 2001, and by 2002 Nortia had been renamed Azzurra, owned by operator ASC for a service between Italy and Dubrovnik.

Kalle III was a sistership to Djursland II, built in 1974 by Schichau Unterweser AG, Bremerhaven, Germany. It had originally been intended that she serve on the Grenå-Hundested route as Kattegat II, but she was moved to Juelsminde-Kalundborg as Kalle III from delivery. Between 1983-89 she was chartered to Sally UK for Ramsgate-Dunkerque service as The Viking. Between 1989-91 she ran for Vaasanlaivat as the Wasa Prince. From 1991 to 2000 she served Bornholm as the Peder Olsen, and was then sold to Moby Lines as the Moby Lally, for whom she remained in service in 2002.

Kattegat (3)
(GHL: 1995)

An attempt was made to revive the Grenå-Hundested route in 1995 with the fast monohull ferry Kattegat (3). Due to unreliability, the route was not a success, but a series of attractive official postcards were issued whilst hopes were still high for continued success.
