Metrocagliari
Metropolitana Leggera di Cagliari  -  ARST SpA

This page shows images of Metrocagliari, a 950mm gauge tram system operated by ARST Gestione FdS, later ARST SpA (Trasporti Regionali della Sardegna).

Metrocagliari is currently a single route from Repubblica to Monserrato-San Gottardo along the route previously used by FdS trains, relaid and electrified for the Metro, with new stations built which are often adjacent to old FdS concrete platforms which remain. At San Gottardo the Metro connects with the FdS diesel railcars running to Mandas and Isili. On my October 2010 the FdS diesel railcars ran only 4km to Settimo, where passengers transfer to buses for the remainder of their journeys. The online timetable indicates that this was still the case in November 2012. Google Earth images suggest that the line as far as Settimo has been fully relaid and electrification work has started and maybe completed. Sources state that another extension to Policlinico was scheduled to open in December 2012.

In earlier steam days the FdS trains ran further into Cagliari from Repubblica along the streets to the harbour. This created to much congestion so the line was curtailed at Repubblica. A trolleybus route linked Repubblica to the waterfront in 2010, but the trolleybuses are being phased out.

Nine Škoda 06T trams were delivered initially, numbered CA01-CA09. They are five-section low-floor bi-directional trams, developed by Škoda for Cagliari. The vehicles have six-axles and fully air-conditioned, and the design is based on the Škoda 05 T. The low-floor area represents 65% of the entire vehicle floor. The total length is 29.5m and they have 46 seats with a total capacity of 238.

The vehicles lack the external style of the Pininfarina-designed vehicles on the other Sardinian tramway at Sassari.

Cagliari - Repubblica

The Cagliari terminus of the Metro is at Repubblica, where a modern new station has been built. Whilst it had a staffed information desk, there was neither a ticket office nor ticket machines. We were directed to newsagents but had to try three before we found one that sold Metro tickets. The line is double track to the first stop at Gennari, after which it is single track with passing loops. I found it was possible to take photos of the route though the driver's cab window of the route, but could not get close enough due to other passengers until the fifth stop Citta'Mercato. Images of the rest of the route to Monserrato-San Gottardo are shown below.
