Prague Steamboat Company
The Prague Steamboat Company (Czech: Pražská paroplavební společnost, a.s.) provides regular sightseeing cruises in the lower Vltava river. It is one of the oldest Czech companies.

The person who played a very important part in establishing the company was František Dittrich (who later became a mayor of Prague). Prague Steamboat Company was established as a purely Czech company in 1865 when, after receiving a concession from Emperor Franz Josef I, it launched the steamboat Praha (Prague) on the route from Prague to Štěchovice (a small town about 20 km south of Prague). The first years were not easy mainly due to the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, however, two decades later the company flourished in the economic boom that began in 1884. More steamboats were being built and in 1902 operations between Prague and Klecany (a village situated to the north of Prague) were launched.

After World War I the fleet comprised 8 large and 2 smaller paddle wheelers and 13 propeller steamboats. A new route from Prague through Mělník to Litoměřice and on the central Elbe River above Mělník was opened. The economic crisis combined with competition from bus line transport, the construction of the Vrané Dam and other factors nearly led PPS to bankruptcy in 1936. The company was taken over by Czechoslovak Joint Stock Elbe Steamboat Company while preserving the original name. In 1961 the company was incorporated into Prague Public Transport Company. Problems with the maintenance of steam engines brought about the retirement of several paddle wheelers and in 1970 only four remained in operation. After the Iron Curtain collapsed the company got its independence back and within a few years it was able to adapt itself to a market economy when it became part of the EVD group (Evropská vodní doprava, s.r.o. – European Water Transport).

The Prague Steamboat Company operates two historical restaurant paddle steamers, the Vltava and the Vyšehrad, which were declared cultural monuments in 2013. Both refurbished and completely functional steamers cruise on regular routes through Prague, on excursions to Slapy and Mělník and are a popular place for company and private events. There mission is to preserve both historical steamboats in such a way that current as well as future generations get to know the magic of steam navigation in its most original form. The Prague Steamboat Co paddle steamers work in conjunction with Prague Boats (see below). Ref: Wikipedia

Vysehrad - Built 1938

Vyšehrad is one of the last two remaining operating steamboats on the Vltava River in Prague, Czech Republic and belongs to the Prague Steamboat Company.

Vyšehrad was built in 1938 during the company's modernization in the 1930s when new boats were being bought and old ones modernized.[1] Her original name was Antonín Švehla (a famous politician of the First Republic). Type-wise the Vyšehrad was similar to then a decade old steamers Dresden and Leipzig that belonged to SBDA Company (situated in Dresden).
It has been renamed at several points in history - Karlstein in 1942, T.G. Masaryk after World War II and Děvín in 1952. In 1992 it was completely renovated and renamed Vyšehrad. The most recent reconstruction took place in winter 2006/2007 in Laubegast shipyard in Dresden.

Vyšehrad is 62m long and 6,2 m wide, 10,5 over the paddleboxes. It has a 165 kW (220 k) engine. Originally it could carry 885 passengers, nowadays it is 300 and 199 of them can be seated. Its maximum speed is approximately 17 km/h.

At first Vyšehrad was used on a route between Prague and Vrané nad Vltavou (a little town about 10 km (6.2 mi) south of Prague). During the World War II she served in Dresden as a field kitchen, after the war she was returned to Prague. In the 1970s Vyšehrad was used on the route between Prague and Štěchovice. Since the 1992 reconstruction she is used mainly as a restaurant boat and a boat for private cruises.

Vltava - Built 1940

Vltava has been in operation since 1940 when the Prague Steamboat Company decided to renovate its fleet. After World War II there were 17 steamboats altogether but as time went by they decayed and most of them were set aside. Only two of them are still in use – Vltava and Vyšehrad.

Vltava belongs to a group of rather small steamboats. It had to be shorter and narrower in order to be able to sail easily and safely through the very busy locks on the route from Prague to Štěchovice for which it had originally been built. Because there were very low bridges on the river it did not even have a sightseeing deck. It was built in the PRAGA shipyard in Prague under the supervision of the chief constructor Mr Benbenek. After some delay it was finally floated out on 27 August 1940. It was worth 2.7 million Czech crowns.
During World War II it had to be renamed along with many other boats. Its name was Moldau I (Moldau is a German word for the Vltava). The steamboat kept running on its route to Štěchovice until 1990 when it was put aside after an accident. In 1991 it was partially repaired and started operating as a restaurant boat. The last reconstruction was carried out in 2007 when the steamboat was completely reconstructed to resemble the one from 1940 as closely as possible.

The paddle steamer's length is 53 meters and it is 5.1 metres wide. It has a 112.5 kW (150 k) steam engine. The Vltava can hold 250 passengers, 100 of them can be seated. It reaches the speed of 16.5 km/h. It has its own restaurant, bar and a partially covered deck.
