Fjord Line

This page is devoted to postcards of the Fjord Line. An alphabetical list of ships shown on this page is shown below. The Table beneath gives links to complete postcard history pages on selected individual ships. Below the table are official postcards of the fleet in chronological order.

Fjord Line began operations in 1993 on the delivery of the Bergen. The initial route operated between Hanstholm (Denmark), Egersund and Bergen (both Norway). In 1998 they took over the Newcastle-Norway service of Color Line, along with the dedicated ship Color Viking, which was renamed Bergen. The route connects Bergen, Haugesund and Stavanger with Newcastle. Both routes are shown in the map below. In 2002, a majority shareholding in Fjord Line was acquired by Color Line, however, this was subsequently sold. In 2003, Bergen was chartered to DFDS as the Duchess of Scandinavia, being replaced by the Fjord Norway, ex-Spirit of Tasmania/Peter Pan. Bergen returned in 2005, and was renamed Atlantic Traveller.

Bergen (1993-2003)
Atlantic Traveller (2005- )

The Bergen was built for Fjord Line in 1993. She is 16794 grt and carries 882 passengers, 160 cars and 40 trucks. The three official postcards below show the original colour scheme, which was very similar to other Norwegian operators Color Line and Scandi Line. From 2003 she was chartered to DFDS as the Duchess of Scandinavia. She was used on the Harwich to Cuxhaven route, which was closed in 2005. Duchess of Scandinavia was returned to her owners, and renamed Atlantic Traveller before re-entering service.

This aerial picture of Hanstholm shows the Bergen at her berth. It is published by Wadmanns Forlag (serial 94268), using a photo by Aage Pedersen.

Following the acquisition of the Newcastle-Norway route of Color Line, Fjord Line changed their colour scheme. This rather dull official card of Bergen shows the new green livery.

Jupiter (1998- )

Jupiter was originally built in 1975 for the Silja Line partner EFFOA, as the Wellamo. In 1981 she was sold to DFDS and renamed Dana Gloria for their Newcastle to Gothenburg and Esbjerg services. In 1983 she moved to the Copenhagen-Oslo service of DFDS. In 1984 she was chartered to Silja Line partner Johnson Line and named Svea Corona (previously carried by a sistership). In 1985 she reverted to the Copenhagen-Oslo service of DFDS, originally as Dana Gloria, but renamed King of Scandinavia when lengthened in 1989. In 1994 she was sold to Color Line and renamed Color Viking, and she passed to Fjord Line as Jupiter in 1998, along with her route from Newcastle to Norway.

Fjord Norway (2003- )

Fjord Norway was built as the Peter Pan (3) was built in 1986 by Schichau Seebeckswerft AG, Bremerhaven, for the TT Line Travemünde-Trelleborg route. Her sisters were the Nils Holgersson (4), Olau Britannia (2) and Olau Hollandia (2). She was sold in 1993 to the Government of Tasmania, for service between Devonport (Tasmania) and Melbourne (Australia) as the Spirit of Tasmania. She was laid up in Sydney in 2002 following the arrival of the two Superfast ferries. In 2003, she was bought by Fjord Line to replace the Bergen on their Bergen-Hantsholm route as the Fjord Norway.
