Verdon-sur-Mer  -  Le Môle d'Escale

As ships became larger between the wars it was decided to build a passenger terminal and pier nearer the sea. Described as the 'môle d'escale' (stopover pier?), construction was started in 1929 and was completed in 1933. Verdon experienced a period of prosperity and the 1930s population has never been exceeded since. An electric railway connected the pier to Bordeaux. It hosted hundreds of transatlantic liners during its period of activity. The pier was destroyed in November 1944 by the Germans controlling the pocket Royan and the Pointe de Grave and was never rebuilt, although some of the remains were used as an oil terminal between 1966-1986.
