Viking Line

Page 2 - 1979-80

This page is devoted to postcards of the Viking Line, and covers ships delivered during the rebuilding of the fleet between 1978 and 1980. An alphabetical list of ships covered on this page is shown below. The Viking Line - Header Page has brief history of the company and a table of individual ship histories. Below the table are official postcards of the fleet in alphabetical order. Other Viking Line pages:- Part 1 - Part 3 - Part 4

The early 1970s Viking Line fleet soon required replacement by a series of larger ships from 1979. These ships are covered on this page. Rederi AB Sally were the dominant Viking Line partner at this time, with the delivery of Viking Saga, Viking Sally and Viking Song, all in 1980. Around this time, Sally also acquired Vaasanlaivat, started operations across the English Channel and became involved in cruising activities (all to be covered on separate web pages).

An even larger series of ships were delivered between 1985-92, which are covered on Viking Line - Page 3 and Viking Line - Page 4. The Sally influence decreased when some of their other operations lost money, SF Line and Slite taking over the Helsinki route in 1985 when the Mariella and Olympia were delivered. Sally were acquired by Silja group owners EFFOA and Johnson Line, and were forced to leave the Viking consortium in 1987. In the early 1990s, the Slite company ran into financial difficulties, and their ships were sold, leaving just SF Line, which renamed itself to Viking Line.

Turella (1979- )

Turella was built by Wärtsilä Åbo, Finland, in 1979 for Viking Line consortium member SF Line. She was 16630 gross tons, 136.1m in length, and could carry 1700 passengers (732 berths) and 549 cars. Turella was used on the Kapellskär-Mariehamn-Naantali route until 1988, when she was sold to Stena Line. She served with Stena Line as Stena Nordica on their service between Gothenburg and Frederikshavn until 1996, when she was transferred to their Lion Ferry subsidiary as the Lion King. In 1997 she was purchased by Tallink and was renamed Fantaasia for use on their Stockholm to Tallinn route.

Viking Saga (1980-90)

Viking Saga was built in 1980 for Rederi Ab Sally, part of the Viking Line consortium, and used on their Helsinki-Stockholm service. Her sistership was Viking Song. She was replaced in 1986 by Olympia, and was modified for cruising out of Helsinki as the Sally Albatross. She was burnt out whilst undergoing a refit in Stockholm in 1990. By this time Rederi Ab Sally had been acquired by Effjohn International, owners of Silja Line. Although declared a total constructive loss, the lower hull was used to create a new ship, also called Sally Albatross, reappearing in 1992. In 1994, she grounded whilst on a cruise, suffering major damage. After repairs, she was chartered to Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) as the Leeward. The Baltic cruise market had been hit badly by the Estonia disaster in September 1994. In 1999 the charter was transferred to NCL's owners, Star Cruises, for service in the Far East as SuperStar Taurus. The charter was terminated by Star Cruises in 2002, and she returned to her owners for service as Silja Opera.

Viking Sally (1980-90)

Viking Sally was built for Rederi AB Sally, part of the Viking Line consortium, in 1980 by Meyer of Papenburg. Sally were the dominant partner in the Viking Line consortium at this time, with three large ferries delivered in the same year. However, the company was soon in financial difficulties, having branched out into other unprofitable areas, and was taken over by Silja Line partners Effjohn in 1987. Sally was forced out of the Viking Line consortium, although Viking Sally remained in Viking Line service on charter until 1990. She then became the Silja Star, operating from Turku, until transferred to Wasa Line (ex-Vaasanlaivat) as Wasa King. She was sold to Estline as the Estonia in 1992. Estonia was lost in heavy seas in the early hours of 28th September 1994, whilst on passage from Tallinn to Stockholm.

Viking Song (1980-85)

Viking Song was built by Wärtsila Marina Åbo, Finland, in 1980, for Rederi AB Sally, part of the Viking Line consortium, and is the sistership to Viking Saga. She was sold in 1985 to Fred Olsen, and served as Braemar on North Sea services. In 1991 she was chartered to the Baltic Shipping Company to start a service between Kiel and St Petersburg as Anna Karenina. This service ceased in 1996, and she was bought by a company jointly owned by Nordström & Thulin and Estline, for use by Estline as Regina Baltica. In 2000 the charter transferred to Tallink.
