Barcelona Trambaix
Barcelona TRAM - Page 2

This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of the new Barcelona Trambaix tramway, opened April 2004. There is a second Barcelona tramway Trambesòs with lines T4-T6, which opened at the same time.

The initial part of the system opened on 3rd April 2004, and the photographs below were taken four days later on 7th April. There are three lines, T1, T2 and T3. The main axis is T1 which runs from a terminus at the Plaça Francesc Macià on the Diagonal (an impressive road which runs, as the name suggests, diagonally across the grid pattern of Barcelona streets). the route runs along Diagonal to the University, where it turns left through the main campus and continues to Pont d'Esplugues, Cornellà and Bon Viatge, a distance of 10.6 km. Route T2 follows exactly the same route, and extends it a further 1.2 km along single track to Sant Marti de l'Erm, in the process doubling back on itself almost as far as Montesa. Route T3 again follows the same tracks from Plaça Francesc Macià to Montesa, and then runs off to the right on a branch to Ramblas de Sant Just and Sant Feliu. This branch was not open on my 2004 visit, and trams were running light for a few hundred metres to a temporary terminus, about 200m from the terminus of Route T2. Passengers disembarked at Montesa originally, Sant Marti de l'Erm opening soon afterwards. The extension to Sant Felia/Consell Comarcal opened on 5th January 2006. Although no scheduled service use it, there is a junction between T2 and T3 at Sant Marti.

Barcelona Trambaix

The pictures are placed in geographical order, starting at the city terminus at Plaça Francesc Macià, following route T1 to its terminus at Sant Joan Despí (centre), since renamed Bin Viatge, then continuing along the extension of route T2 to Hospital Comarcal, since renamed Sant Marti l'Erm. This is only a few hundred metres walk from the current temporary terminus of route T3, and they are connected by tracks not yet in use on my 2004 visit.
