Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway

Originally opened in 1898, and closed in 1935; the current short operational track section from Woody Bay is just the beginning of an exciting project to rebuild one of the world's most famous and picturesque narrow gauge railways; the legendary Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.

This initial section allows visitors to experience a taste of what will one day become one of the ultimate narrow gauge treasures of the world as they once again travel by train along the original route above the delightful Heddon Valley near Parracombe in Exmoor's National Park on the longest closed section of railway line to have ever been reopened solely through volunteer effort.

Passenger Rolling Stock

ex-Thorpe Park Coaches Nos.1-4

Eight of these coaches were acquired by the railway in the early 1990s. Originally built by Alan Keef Ltd in 1984, for the Thorpe Park in Surrey, three of these coaches entered service on the Lynbarn Railway at the Milky Way near Clovelly in 1994/95. The other five were stored on the outskirts of Barnstaple until such time as they were required for use on the railway at Woody Bay Station.

As delivered these coaches were very basic semi-open vehicles, so four were rebuilt mainly as five compartment enclosed panelled vehicles with slam doors and drop-light windows.

   No.1 - A brake 3rd with a dedicated Guards compartment
No.2 - All 3rd with removable seats in one compartment to accommodate a wheelchair
No.3 - Brake Composite having a fully upholstered first class compartment as well as an occasional Guards compartment
No.4 - All 3rd the same as No.2 but without wheelchair facilities.

Heritage Coaches 7, 16 & 17

Original 50-seat L&BR 3rd Observation carriage No. 7. Built 1898 at Bristol Wagon & Carriage Works - owned by the L&BR Trust. Although delivered to Woody Bay as a static exhibit in the early days of operation, lacking bogies and suitable couplings and having no brakes it could not be used in a train. It was decided to remove the vehicle from the railway so that its restoration could continue.

This vehicle returned to Woody Bay in April 2013, along with brake composite carriage No.17. These two were joined by third brake No.16 in September 2013. These three restored carriages are now in revenue-earning service as the Heritage Train.

The L&BR Trust are also actively rebuilding Coach 11 a seven compartment all-third vehicle and this vehicle is due to arrive late 2014.
