The Evesham Vale Light Railway was first opened in
August 2002. The railway was built by Jim & Helen Shackell, with help from
their family and friends, and is run at weekends and school holidays
throughout the year.
Trains are usually steam hauled and travel for over a mile through the old
apple orchards and around the country park, stopping briefly at Evesham Vale
Station. Here you can take a break from your journey to have a picnic, walk
to the river Avon or just enjoy the views overlooking some of the most
picturesque scenery the Vale of Evesham has to offer.
Trains run from Twyford Station, opposite the country park's main Car Park.
The run takes around 10–15 minutes, through the Apple Orchard and around the
Balloon Loop to Evesham Vale Station. Here, there is a few minutes break.
Passengers can either break their journey here and enjoy a picnic or country
walk (returning on a later train), or simply get out for a look at the
locomotive. The EVLR staff are always on hand to answer questions. The train
then carries on, out of the Balloon Loop, upgrade towards Twyford Station.
The locomotive is then turned and run round ready for the next departure.
The railway had four working steam locomotives on my 2011 visit: Barnes Atlantic John,
Bassett-Lowke Class 30 Atlantic Count Louis, Severn Lamb 0-6-0STT
Dougal and Exmoor 0-4-0STT St Egwin. One loco is under
overhaul: 4-6-2 Pacific Prince William. Two other locos remain in
storage as eventual restoration projects: US-styled switcher R H Morse
and another Exmoor engine.
It was announced in March 2011 that the lease to operate the railway was
available for sale. It was taken over by Adrian & Sandra Corke in January
2012.
The rolling stock at December 2012 was:-
No. 312 St Egwin
No. 3 Dougal
No. 32 Count Louis
No. 300 ex-Markeaton Park
No. 452280 ex-Markeaton Park & Littlecote House

fame) in 1924. The loco worked on the Fairbourne Railway from 1925-1985.
Count Louis is privately owned and in 2011 is based on the Evesham Vale
Light Railway where she is used occasionally.

The EVLR acquired four carriages built by John Ellerton for his ‘Reseau Guerledan
Chemin de Fer Touristique' railway in Brittany, France in 1978. Purchased by
Jim & Helen in June 1996. Livery is intentionally similar to that
of the Talyllyn Railway.
