The Audley End Railway is a 10.25 inch gauge railway
built by Lord Braybrooke of Audley End House between 1960-64. The
steam fleet consists of five locos in
2012 following the sale of tow very fine scale models of LNWR and GWR
prototypes. All five locos were in use at the 2012 Steam Gala on 16th
September. The railway also has two diesel
locos.

3548 Lord Braybrooke
(1964- )
No.3548 Lord Braybrooke was built in 1948 as
second of David Curwen's 'Americanised' Atlantics (works number 3548)
initially used at Southend-on-Sea and then Swindon. It carried the names
Bobbie and Gordon. Bought for use at Audley End in 1964, it
carried an LNER green livery with a tender lettered Audley End Railroad.
When the Audley End line was extended in 1979, the Atlantic struggled for
adhesion on the new gradients and so was rebuilt by David Curwen as a 2-6-2.
The rebuilt loco was renamed Lord Braybrooke and given a mid-green
livery. The loco looks much better as a prairie than one of the rather
ungainly atlantics.

4433 Ivatt Atlantic
(1965- )
No.4433 was built in 1965 by Curwen & Newberry between
1964-65 as the first scale loco on the Audley End Railway. The loco has been very
successful and received few modifications other than repaints.

No.489 was built in 1977 by David Curwen, the third
of his K36-class 2-8-2 locos based on a Denver & Rio Grande prototype. It is
the first of the Audley End narrow gauge locos which have cabs large enough
for the driver to sit inside. Loco and tender weigh over 2.5 tonnes, the
largest and most powerful loco on the railway. Sara Lucy
makes an impressive sight double-heading with the other US inspired narrow
gauge loco Bruce

No.24 Bruce is an American outline 2-6-2
based on a Sandy River & Rangely Lakes Railroad prototype. Built by David
Curwen, as are most locos on the railway.

Barbara Curwen is the latest delivery to
the Audley End Railway and is another narrow gauge design, based on the
'main line' locos of the Penrhyn Railway in North Wales. Two of these locos,
Linda and Blanche, continue to run on the Festiniog
Railway .These have been modified from 0-4-0ST tanks to 2-4-0 tender locos.
Barbara Curwen is modified further and is a 2-4-2 tender loco and was
built by David Curwen in 1997.

Audley End Diesel Locomotives
B-B Henrietta Jane is powered by a Ford
Escort engine through a hydraulic transmission. The design is based on a
Jamaican sugar plantation loco and was built by Tony Crowhurst in Hythe,
Kent. No.691 is the only loco on the railway not built by David Curwen.

Saffron Walden & District
Society of Model Engineers
The Saffron Walden & District
Society of Model Engineers is based next to the Audley End Railway and
Audley End House and Gardens. They have a 1300ft ground level circular track
in 5 & 7¼ inch gauge together with a raised 400ft track for 3½, 5 & 7¼ inch
gauges.
There is a larger 10¼ inch gauge No.682 Doris
on the Audley End Railway and this smaller loco of the same name of the
Saffron Walden & District Society of Model Engineers
appears to be based on the larger loco.

Audley End House is largely an
early 17th-century country house just outside Saffron Walden, Essex, south
of Cambridge. It was once a palace in all but name and renowned as one of
the finest Jacobean houses in England. Audley End is now only one-third of
its original size, but is still large, with much to enjoy in its
architectural features and varied collections. After the war, the ninth Lord
Braybrooke resumed possession, and in 1948 the house was sold to the
Ministry of Works. It is currently in the stewardship of English Heritage
though remains the family seat of the Lords Braybrooke.
