Queen Victoria Cruise Voyage V913: Mediterranean Medley II - 17th-30th August 2009 Day 3: 19th August - Sea Day |
||
This is the record of a 13 night cruise taken on
board Cunard's Queen Victoria from Southampton on 17th August 2009. This page covers the
second sea day out of
Southampton on Wednesday 19th August.
The day again started bright and sunny, and remained so all day. We were now heading south past Spain and Portugal at 20.9 knots. At midday we had travelled 849 nautical miles from Southampton. The two 17-year olds in our party spent the day around the pools and both suffered sun stroke; years of education about the use of sun screen coming to nothing as soon as they were given complete freedom. Members of the Ocean Liner Society are rigorously questioned on all aspects of a cruise, and so we attended the Royal Court Theatre show 'A Stroke of Genius' in the evening (Miles Davis, Shostakovich and Japanese psychedelic speed metal are my favoured musical styles rather than show tunes). 'A Stroke of Genius' was a 'fresh and eclectic show pairing world-famous works of art with popular music'. So Don McLean's Vincent was inevitably tied to Van Gogh's sunflowers, Warhol was represented by Lou Reed and the Stones, and ballerinas danced for Degas. Hoagy Carmichael may have been the correct period for Edward Hopper but his cheery brilliance failed to convey the depressed loneliness of Hopper's diners. A bit of a mess in some ways, but energetically performed, and full marks for ambition and avoiding too many crowd pleasers. |
