Wednesday 3rd August 2005: Reykjavik, Iceland

QE2 anchored in Reykjavik on schedule at 7:00am. We followed Artemis into port, but we anchored off the old fishing harbour, whilst Artemis proceeded to the newer commercial harbour (requiring a but trip into town). Tender operations started at 7:30am, but we were staggered to learn that passengers not booked on trips could not get tickets to disembark until 10:00am. They actually started slightly sooner than this, and we were ashore by 10:05am. The weather was fine and sunny and remained so all day. For postcard collectors there is an excellent card and stamp shop Magni R. Magnusson in the main shopping street at Laugavegur 15, selling a number of old Icelandic passenger ship and fishing boat cards. QE2 sailed officially at 18:00hrs, getting away eventually at 18:30hrs after being turned on the anchor by a very small tug/pilot boat. Artemis followed us out, then headed south whilst QE2 went north around the coast, proceeding at up to 28 knots. By this stage I had given up on ship's coffee altogether, which is a weak tasteless brew as favoured by Americans - even the tea has more colour. I had not ascertained at this stage whether anywhere on ship sold a decent expresso. QE2 had also developed a distinct list to port.

Sæbjórg was built in 1974 by Trondhjems M/V, Aker Trondelag A/S, Trondheim, as Benchijigua (1) for Ferry Gomera (later Lineas Fred.Olsen). She operated between Agaete and San Sebastian de la Gomera in the Canary Islands. In 1980 Benchijigua (1) was renamed Betancuria (1) and transfered to the Corralejo-Playa Blanca route. Betancuria (1) was sold in 1984 to H/f Skallagrimur, Akranes, Iceland and renamed Akraborg for service between Reykjavik and Akranes. She maintained this until 1998 when she was taken over by Slysavarnarfelag for service with their Maritime Safety and Survival Training Centre (Slysavarnaskóli sjómanna). She was renamed Sæbjórg.

Friday 5th August 2005: Cruising Norwegian Sea

QE2 left Akureyri nearly two hours late, and after proceeding down the fjord, set off across the Atlantic Ocean at around 28.5 knots towards Norway, speed which was maintained throughout the following day. Weather was dull but the following seas slight.

Saturday 6th August 2005: Flåm, Norway

QE2 arrived at Flåm after passing up the Sognefjord and berthed at the pier by the station at 8:00am. Baltic Kristina arrived shortly afterwards. After departure at 18:00hrs, QE2 returned out to sea and headed north to the Storfjord. The Flåmsbanen runs from Flåm to Myrdal, a distance of 20.2 km and a climb of 863.5 m at gradients of up to 1 in 18 (very steep for an adhesion railway). Each train is top & tailed with a powerful electric loco with 5 separate breaking systems. All trains stop to see the Kjosfossen Waterfall, where the mythical siren Huldra appears and sings her song to lure men to their death. Huldra magically appears in different places on the rocks (there are two of them).

Sunday 7th August 2005: Cruising the Storfjord

QE2 travelled north in gale force winds until passing Ålesund and entering the Storfjord around lunchtime. QE2 proceeded to where the fjord splits into the Norddalsfjord and Sunnylvstfjord, where she turned around and returned out to sea, running into the weather until 1:00am when she turned and retraced her path towards the Storfjord. After a further rough night, QE2 re-entered the Storfjord at about 3:00am.
