Galatea

The ceremonial cutting of the steel to begin the construction of the new 84m Trinity House Multi-Function Tender (MFT) THV Galatea occurred at the Stocznia Remontowa SA shipbuilders yard in Gdansk, Poland, on Tuesday 11 October 2005. The Galatea arrived in Harwich from Poland on 23rd July 2007. The Galatea is a replacement for THV Mermaid (4) which will be sold out-of-service once Galatea has successfully completed an initial period of trials and crew training. She has an overall length of 84.20 metres and breadth of 16.50 metres. The level of sophistication in her equipment is second to none and boasts dynamic positioning, a large aft working deck area, integrated bridge management system and forward helicopter flight deck. She is also able to carry out additional tasks such as hydrographic surveying and wreck finding and contract commercial work.

Alert

On Tuesday 11 October 2005, the new Trinity House Rapid Intervention Vessel (RIV) Alert was launched at the Stocznia Remontowa SA shipbuilders yard in Gdansk, Poland. She arrived in Harwich in April 2006. Alert is a coastal working vessel and will, in addition to maintaining aids to navigation, provide a fast response to incidents and carry out emergency wreck marking and hydrographic survey services. Her primary area of operation will be the busy shipping routes of the Dover Strait, English Channel and Southern North Sea. The Alert marks the first stage of an investment of £38 million on three new vessels by the General Lighthouse Authorities (GLA’s) of the United Kingdom and Ireland. The vessel will be equipped with 3000kw main engines and is 52.5 tonnes deadweight. She has twin CCP drives, bow thrusters and a dynamic positioning system.

Stena Line

Stena Britannica
(Stena Line BV: 2003- )

Stena Britannica II entered service between Harwich and the Hook of Holland in February 2003. She was renamed Stena Britannica (the fourth of the name) soon after entering service. Stena Britannica (4) is owned by Stena parent company Stena Ro-Ro, and is chartered to Stena Line BV who operate the Harwich-Hook of Holland route. Stena Adventurer entered service between Holyhead and Dublin later in 2003. Both sisters are of 30500 gross tons, carry 380 passengers and 200 trailers, and have a service speed of 22knots. Stena Britannica II replaced the Stena Britannica (3) at Harwich in 2003 - Stena Britannica (3) was then sold to Finnlines, joining the first two sisters in the Stena Seapacer series.

Stena Partner
(Stena Line BV: 2003- )

Stena Partner was one of a class of 11 sister ships built by Hyundia in South Korea between 1977/78. They were built by Stena Line for charter or sale, and her first charter was to Arghiris Line of Greece, as the Alpha Enterprise. In 1979 she had a brief charter to North Sea Ferries. Alpha Enterprise was then rebuilt with extra passenger and freight accommodation at Hapag Lloyd Werft, Bremerhaven, before passing to Hellas Ferries as the Syria, for a service from Greece to Syria. Her sistership Stena Transfer also worked for Hellas Ferries as Hellas (2). In 1981 Syria returned to Hapag Lloyd Werft for lengthening. From 1982-1983 she was chartered to Townsend Thoresen European Ferries, for Felixstowe-Europoort service, before returning to Stena Line, who renamed her Stena Transporter. She then had short charters to TT-SAGA Line and Cobelfret in 1984. In 1985 Stena Transporter was chartered by Townsend Thoresen European Ferries, becoming the Cerdic Ferry on services from Felixstowe. In 1992, the charter passed to P&O European Ferries when P&O acquired the Townsend Thoresen routes, and she was renamed European Freeway. In 1994 European Freeway was puchased by P&O, remaining on Felixstowe-Rotterdam (Europoort service). In 2002, the P&O Felixstowe services were sold to Stena Line. European Freeway was briefly renamed Freeway before becoming Stena Partner in January 2003. The UK terminal for the Europoort service was moved to Harwich.

Collapsed Container Crane

Two ship-to-shore gantry cranes at Felixstowe’s Landguard Terminal ended up in a mangled heap on the quayside on March 1st after a ship delivering three new ship-to-shore cranes to the port broke loose from its moorings in high winds and crashed into them.

The Zhen Hua 23, which was delivering the new cranes from Shanghai for Felixstowe’s Trinity Terminal, had been laid up at the Landguard Terminal in anticipation of the bad weather. However, it broke its moorings in the 80 mph winds in the early hours of March 1st, drifted southwards and hit the two cranes.
