Norwegian Coastal Express - The 2007 Fleet

 

 

This page is devoted to postcards of the Norwegian Coastal Express (Hurtigruten) fleet of 2007.

 

The newly started Vesteraalens Dampskipsselskap (VDS) in Stokmarknes took the challenge to start the coastal express. Captain Richard With and his crew had for a longer time measured speed and time for the route and they believed it possible to start a coastal express route. On the 18th of May 1893, VDS signed an agreement with the Norwegian government for a support for one weekly sailing between Trondheim and Tromsø in the wintertime and Trondheim and Hammerfest in the summer. On the 2nd of July 1893, Vesteraalen left Trondheim for Hammerfest on the first voyage. Later the route was expanded to sail from Bergen to Kirkenes.

 

In 2006 the two hurtigrute-companies had 14 vessels. The companies were OVDS (Ofoten & Vesterålens Dampskipsselskap) and TFDS (Troms fylkes dampskipsselskap), and each ran 7 ships. The ordinary service requires 11 ships running in the service and each company had one older extra ship (Nordstjernen and Lofoten). Every port from Bergen to Kirkenes has two visits every day, in the north direction and in the south direction.

 

In 2006 the OVDS and TFDS fleets combined under the Hurtigruten banner, and received a new livery. The Narvik of 1982 was sold, and new ship Fram was delivered in May 2007

Nordstjernen (1956)

ex-TFDS

Nordstjernen (North Star) is the TFDS extra ship. She operates cruises to Svalbard (Spitzbergen) in the summer season and on the coastal express some time in the winter. She was built in 1956 and was on the coastal express service from 1956-1994. Nordstjernen was owned initially by BDS (Bergen Damspskipsselskap).

Lofoten (1964)

ex-OVDS

Lofoten was owned by OVDS and is their extra ship. She runs on the service from November to March. Lofoten was built in 1964 and was originally owned by VDS (Vesterålen Dampskipsselskap) and secondly by FFR (Finnmark Fylkes Rederi).

Lyngen (2) (1982-2007)

ex-TFDS

Lyngen was built as Midnatsol for TFDS in 1982, and ran on the Hurtigruten until 2003 when she was laid up as Midnatsol II to release the name for the new Midnatsol (4). In 2005 she was renamed Lyngen (2) and is due to cruise in Greenland in the summer, and act as relief Hurtigrute in the winter allowing larger newer ships to cruise in warmer climes. It was announced in September 2007 that Lyngen had been sold to Lindblad Expeditions.
