	This page is one of a series devoted to postcards and photographs of the ocean liners and cruise ships in the Holland America Line. This page shows 2011 images of the interior and exterior cruise ship Rotterdam of 1999. The ship has recently received its Signature of Excellence refit. Much of the ship is rather dark and gloomy, using dark blues, purples and reds in many areas. A side effect of this was that photography was quite difficult. In particular, the La Fontaine Dining Room is very dark compared to the light and airy feel to the main dining areas on most ship. I found this room and the areas around the Atrium to be quite claustrophobic.

The Crow's Nest is at the forward end of the Sports Deck. This is a strange and sparsely furnished bar and dancing area looking over the bridge. It uses the dark blues and reds of the much of the rest of the ship, but they work even less well in this brightly illuminated space with its panoramic windows. There are then open deck areas along each side of the ship with various deck games (practice tennis, basketball etc) available aft. At the far aft is Club HAL and the Loft which are areas reserved for teens.

At the forward end of Lido Deck is the spa area and gym. The main midships area of the deck is the Lido Pool which has a retractable roof, surrounded by the Terrace Grill, various whirlpools and The Lido Bar. Aft of this is the Lido buffet restaurant. The recently extended area far aft (over additional cabins) is the 'retreat' with 'the bar at the retreat' and a video screen at its forward end.

The Upper Promenade deck is the level with most public rooms. At the forward end is the upper level of the two-deck Showroom at Sea. In the midships area moving aft is the rather dark atrium area with the shop and the Ocean Bar on the starboard side. Aft again is the Casino (port) and the Mix bar area to starboard, with separate the separate bars named Champagne, Martini and Spirits & Ales. Next is the Explorer's area with Explorations Cafe to port (including the library, online facilities etc), and Explorer's Lounge to starboard. At the stern is the upper level of the two deck La Fontaine Dining Room.

At the forward end of Upper Promenade Deck is the lower level of the two-deck Showroom at Sea, whilst at the stern is the lower level of the two deck La Fontaine Dining Room. Between the two are the purser's desk, tours desk, art gallery, photo gallery plus a wine tasting area and the Waling Theater and Culinary Arts Centre. Just forward of the La Fontaine is the Pinnacle Grill extra cost restaurant.
