Windstar Sail Cruises

This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of Windstar Cruises.

The line was established as Windstar Sail Cruises in 1984 by Karl Gosta Andren, and its first ship, the Wind Star launched in 1986 by Société Nouvelle des Ateliers et Chantiers du Havre, followed by the Wind Song and Wind Spirit. Windstar's ships are officially motor-sail-yachts (msy). The vessels' unique rigging can be furled or unfurled in two minutes at the push of a button, all functions being operated from the bridge by computers and navigational devices.

Two additional ships were ordered from Société Nouvelle des Ateliers et Chantiers du Havre; the Wind Surf and the Wind Saga. These two ships were to be larger than the originals holding over twice the number of passengers and having a length of 660 ft compared to the previous vessels at 440 ft in length. They had five masts compared to the four of the original trio.

Holland America Line purchased 50% of Windstar Sail Cruises in 1987 and purchased the balance of the company in 1988. The option to continue building the Wind Surf and the Wind Saga was not pursued by HAL. With assistance from the French Government the two larger ships were built for Club Med. The Carnival Corporation bought Holland America, and hence Windstar Sail Cruises, in 1989. In 1994 the company offices were moved to those of Holland America and the official title was changed to Windstar Cruises. In 1998, Windstar acquired the sail cruiser Club Med 1 from Club Med Cruises, and renamed her with her intended name Wind Surf. Club Med 2 remains in service with Club Med.

In 2002, the
Wind Song was damaged by an engine room fire in Tahiti causing great technical damage to the vessel, the ship was classed as a total loss and with permission of the Tahitian Government was scuttled in Tahitian waters. In the summer months the Windstar fleet sails the Mediterranean and in the winter the company sails the Caribbean and the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

Windstar Cruises was sold by Carnival to Ambassador International in 2007.

Wind Surf
(Built: 1989 - Windstar: 1998- )

Wind Surf was ordered by Windstar Sail Cruises, along with a second sister, in 1988 as an enlarged version of the existing ships. However the order was not pursued when Holland America acquired the company. The sisters were completed by Société Nouvelle des Ateliers et Chantiers du Havre for Club Med as Club Med 1 and Club Med 2. In 1998, Windstar acquired the sail cruiser Club Med 1 from Club Med Cruises, and renamed her with her intended name of Wind Surf. Club Med 2 remains in service with Club Med.
