This page is one of a series showing mainly shipping
and other transport images from a 14 night cruise on Grand Princess in
October2011 from Southampton to the Mediterranean. We travelled in balcony
cabin C316, Deck 10 on the port side. This page covers our seventh and final port of
call Gibraltar.

Our seventh and final port of call was Gibraltar. We
first visited Punta Europa (the most southerly point of Europe) on a service
bus (town buses are free apart from route 5!). Due to a brain malfunction,
images of the lighthouse were unusable. I realised this as soon as we got on
the bus to return, but the weather was still misty and I decided to try
again another time.
At 12:30 we did the dolphin tour on the lovely
Brixham Belle run by Dolphin
World. As we returned from the dolphin trip
Adventure of the Seas
passed close by.
The 'Great British Sailaway' on
Grand Princess was
embarrassing. Hideous. Passengers were a lot better behaved than those on
Aurora a couple of years back however (as observed from Queen
Victoria). The town centre in Gibraltar is still rather unpleasant -
Margate on the Med. An
espresso in a town cafe was even worse than the ship's attempts, which
were barely
Starbuck's level at best.

A passenger ferry currently operates between
Algeciras and Gibraltar using the small Punta Europa Segundo. The
winter service is only two return trips and it was not possible to sail on
her.

The freighters we passed on the final two sea days were all
to far away to photograph, but I looked out and saw this dramatic rainbow
passing through a distant CMA CGM container ship and took these two images during
the the few minutes that the rainbow lasted.

There are 5 bus routes in Gibraltar. Routes 1-4 serve
the town and are operated by smart blue Dennis Darts of Citibus. These are
free to travel on by residents and visitors. Route 5 is run jointly by
Citibus and other operators using a motley collection of maroon single and
double deck buses obtained second hand from around the world. Route 5 takes
you to the Spanish border and fares are payable.
