This page is one of a series showing mainly shipping
and other transport images from a 14 night cruise on Grand Princess in
October2011 from Southampton to the Mediterranean. We travelled in balcony
cabin C316, Deck 10 on the port side. This page covers our fifth port of

Our fifth port of
call was Cannes. Apart from the old town, I am not a fan of Cannes. To
complicate things, a world economic summit (G20) was due to start the
following day so there were barriers everywhere and 100s of police &
motorcycles. We took the first possible tender and wandered around the old
town and had a wonderful coffee, then returned to the ship and watched the
excursion boats sailing back and forth to the islands. Our tender back was
delayed due to an emergency medical evacuation which allowed for some good
photo opportunities as we waited some distance from the ship.

The Îles de Lérins protect the Baie de
Cannes and consist of Île Sainte-Marguerite and the smaller Île
Saint-Honorat. It only takes a 15-minute boat ride from Cannes to get to Île
Sainte-Marguerite, but it took the Man in the Iron Mask 11 years to
leave this tiny, forested island. The mysterious individual was believed to
be of noble blood, but his identity has never been proven. His cell can be
visited in the Fort of St Marguerite, now renamed the Musée de la Mer
Cistercian monks are the only inhabitants of the smaller, southern Île
Saint-Honorat. Monks have inhabited the island more or less continuously
since AD410 and, at the height of their powers, owned Cannes, Mougins and
Vallauris, plus Seborga (in Italy). Medieval vestiges remain in the stark
church, which is open to the public, and in the ruins of the 11th-century
monastery on the sea’s edge. The monastery is closed to the general public.
The monks also run the only boat trips to the island, with departures from
Cannes jetée Edouard.
The smaller Îlot Saint-Ferréol and Îlot de la Tradelière are uninhabited.
