This page is one of a series showing mainly shipping
and other transport images from a 14
night cruise on Grand Princess
in October2011 from Southampton to the Mediterranean. We travelled in
balcony cabin C316, Deck 10 on the port side. This page covers the first
port visit at Malaga, having missed Cadiz due to predicted weather problems
there.

Our first port of call was Malaga, having missed
Cadiz due to predicted weather problems. It rained for most of the day and
we made quick visit to the city but returned to the ship for lunch. There
were no waiter service restaurants open despite the ship being very busy due
to the poor weather. The choice available in the Horizon Court seemed rather
poor compared to other large ships travelled on recently. There are two
separate and identical food lines, one each side of the ship. Ships with a
single large buffet court can offer a far wider range of foods.
Both Costa Deliziosa and Splendour of the Seas were in
port when we arrived, the Costa ship leaving at 12:30. Splendour
had finished her summer Mediterranean season and was due to enter refit
where over 100 new balconies were to be fitted, along with four new eating
areas, outdoor cinema screen and improved children's areas. Splendour
then took a 14 westbound Transatlantic cruise from Lisbon to Santos (Sao
Paulo) where she is based for the northern winter.
The following sea day was clear and warm. The trade routes through the
Mediterranean tend to follow northern or southern routes. In heading
straight across the centre to Alghero we saw only one distant ship all day.
