Actv - Motonavi & Foranei
Actv operate water and land transport routes in
Venice. Whilst the best know ferries are the smaller vaporetti and
motoscafi, Actv maintains a substantial fleet of larger passenger ferries
(motonave) and car ferries (navi traghetto). The latter operate route 17
between Tronchetto and Lido. There is also a large fleet of foranei, which
carry similar passenger numbers to vaporetti, but are of more substantial
construction for use on the more open routes in the Laguna. During my visit,
the motonavi were restricted to a modified route 15 which now runs direct
from S.Zaccaria (near S.Marco) to Punta Sabbioni on the mainland. previously
it ran via Lido. Only two large vessels were needed in October to maintain
this service, whereas Actv have a fleet of maybe 13 large motonavi,
including four beautifully maintained vessels from the 1930s. Recent
deliveries have been of foranei (=outer) which run an extended route LN
(=Laguna Nord) which has a new southern section running from S.Zaccaria to
Lido, Punta Sabbioni, Burano and Treporti. This connects with the separate
northern route LN running between Treporti, Burano, Murano andFondamente
Nove. There are many online complaints about the replacement of the large
motonavi with smaller foranei on the route from S.Zaccaria to Lido and Punta
Sabbioni, due to overcrowding and lively journeys in poor weather.
Much of the Actv fleet is now kept at Tronchetto,
where the new Actv offices are based
Ships are still repaired at the old shipyard near the Arsenale, including
classic 1930s motonave Eraclea during my visit

The Venice People Mover links a car park (under
construction in October 2010) at Tronchetto to Piazzale Roma with an
intermediate stop Marittima at the Venice cruise terminal. The system opened
on 19th April 2010 and was built by Austrian company Doppelmayer Cable Car
(DCC). It is a single track cable-hauled system with a passing loop at the
intermediate station Marittima. the journey takes 190 seconds with a fastest
dwell time of 30 seconds. At present trains wait for 8 minutes at termini
since traffic is not heavy whilst work continues on the Tronchetto car park.
Maximum capacity is 3000 passengers per hour and the 4-car trains carry 200
passengers. trains run at 29kph (18mph) and the length is 870m. System has
been installed mainly at airports in the US and Europe.
