Consorcio de Transportes Bahía de Cádiz
Consorcio Metropolitano de Transportes de
Andalucía
Consorcio de Transportes Bahía de Cádiz (CMTBC)
operate a bus, rail and ferry services in the Cádiz area. Two ferry service
run from the new Terminal Marítima Cádiz near the town hall. The main route
is to El Puerto de Santa Maria, usually worked by two vessels, whilst the
second route is less frequent running to Rota. Services are run by three
catamarans Bahia Cádiz I, Bahia Cádiz II and Bahia Cádiz III.
More recently a larger new vessel Bahia de Cádiz IV has been
delivered, with an option to order a second vessel. She operated on the El
Puerto route during our visit.

El Vapor de El Puerto
Motonaves Adriano, S.L.
Adriano III operates a ferry service
from
Cádiz
across the bay to El Puerto de Santa Maria. Despite competition from modern,
faster, more frequent and cheaper catamarans, she retains a loyal clientele
and has been adopted as the unofficial emblem of the town of El Puerto (as
it is generally abbreviated). The service had its 80th anniversary recently,
having started in 1929. The current vessel is the third Adriano to
operate on the route and is referred to in publicity as Adriano III,
although the name is rendered in full as Adriano Tercero on the
front of the bridge. She takes about 40 minutes to make the crossing,
compared to 30 minutes on the competing catamarans, berthing adjacent to
their pontoon at Cádiz.
The fare is 3.00€ compared to 2.15
€ on the catamarans. Adriano III
makes just five or six returns trips daily, whilst the cats do 17. Despite
this, huge crowds formed at Cadiz to take this delightful wooden vessel.
Adriano III has become an unofficial
emblem of El
Puerto de Santa Maria, and
images of the vessel appear everywhere, including on the tiles outside a
shop
