Dalmacija
Pearls of the Adriatic Cruise - March/April 2007 - Page 1
This page shows an Adriatic cruise on the Croatian cruise ship
Dalmacija,
taken from 31st March 2007.
Dalmacija
was built in 1965 by Brodogradiliste Uljanik in Yugoslavia (now Croatia) for Jadranska Linijska Plovidba (the Yugoslav state shipping company). She has a sister
Istra
, which is still in service with
Classic International Cruises
as the
Arion
. The sisters operated a long route from Venice calling at numerous Yugoslav, Greek, Lebanese and Egyptian ports, including Piraeus and Dubrovnik in both directions. They were the first large trans-Mediterranean passenger ships to be built in Yugoslavia, and were fitted with enclosed swimming pools. First class cabins all had private facilities and were on the promenade, upper and main decks. The sisters carried 165 first class passengers and 52 tourist class. Twin-screws driven by Sulzer diesels of 7500bhp gave a speed of 18 knots, and stabilisers were fitted from new. They were measured at 5465 grt and were 384ft long.
Dalmacija
was used on occasional cruise in Northern Europe. Ownership passed to Intercruise in 1991. In 2001 she was bought by Ulljanik Ship Management (connected with her builders) who marketed her as Croatian Cruise Line on weekly circuits along the Croatian coast from Venice. Ownership changed again in 2006 to
Adriatic Cruises
(owned by the Croatian Transauto bus company), with plans to run on a similar circuit from Venice between March and November. However, between late April and September,
Dalmacija
has now been chartered by Hansa Kreuzfahrten for use in the Baltic.
We travelled on the third of
Dalmacija
's 2007 cruises for
Adriatic Cruises
, and the Croatian crew were still learning. The passenger/hotel crew ratio seemed high, with many crew multi-tasking around the ship during the course of the day. Whilst the ship is old, she has been well-maintained and some sprucing up of furnishings has been undertaken. Our Category 5 cabin was large and the cabin stewardess was excellent, generally having cleaned the cabin during our breakfast, a remarkable feat considering the long corridor she had to manage each day. Many lower category cabins were extremely small. The plumbing was temperamental.
Meals were leisurely, dinner taking around two hours. There were multiple courses, but little choice and food quality, particularly cuts of meat, were poor. The passengers were mainly German, arranged through Hansa Kreuzfahrten, but we were placed on an English-speaking table. Luckily we had lively and interesting companions, so the long meals were entertaining.
