Costa Europa
Mediterrainean Cruise - March 2008

Page 8: 18th March: Barcelona

This page is one of a series showing a Mediterrainean cruise on Costa Europa in 2008. There is also a full history of Costa Europa.

Cruise Itinerary:- Savona - Sea Day - Malaga - Cádiz - Lisbon - Gibraltar - Alicante - Barcelona - Savona

We only had a half day in Barcelona and so took a taxi from the ship to Gorg, the eastern terminus of route T5 on Trambesòs, one of two recently opened tram systems in Barcelona. We then travelled to Glòries, the current western terminus of T5, where it connects with T4. We continued to Estació de Sant Adrià, the eastern terminus of T4, and back to Ciutadella/Vila Olimpica, thereby covering the complete Trambesòs system, but with no time to take images at intermediate stops. Following a brief visit to the Maritime Museum we had pretty well used our time, and we returned to the ship.

Barcelona Trambesòs

The second part of the Barcelona tram system, known as Trambesòs, opened on 8th May 2004 between Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes and Estació de Sant Adrià as route T4. The route was extended south to Wellington and Ciutadella/Vila Olimpica on 14th July 2004, and route T5 was initiated between Glòries and Besòs on 14th October 2006, extended to Gorg in 2007. A new link between the routes is being built via La Mina, and once this is opened a new route T6 will run from Gorg to St.Adrià de Besòs, whilst both T4 and T5 will then run through to Ciutadella/Vila Olimpica (T5 currently stopping short at Glòries).

We visited Barcelona on 18th March 2008 on Costa Europa. We only had a half day and so took a taxi from the ship to Gorg, the eastern T5 terminus of Trambesòs.

Barcelona Excursion Boats

Harbour tours are operated from the Mirador de Colom (Columbus Monument) at the seaward end of La Ramblas, and near the maritime museum. The shorter tour of around 55minutes is around the sheltered commercial harbour is run by the traditional double-ended ferries Encarnacion, Lolita and M.Del Carmen. These traditional ferries were known as Las Golondrinas, and the name is retained by the operator. Longer tours on the catamarans Trimar and Omnibus also venture into open seas as far as the Olympic Port.
