Celebrity Constellation
Baltic Cruise - August 2007

This page is one of a series showing a Baltic cruise on Celebrity Constellation in 2007 (renamed from Constellation earlier in 2007).

The second Port of call was Rostock (usually Warnemünde on Constellation's Baltic cruises). We berthed adjacent to the Scandlines, TT Line and Silja/Tallink ro-ro berths. A DB charter train of 13 coaches was on the quay waiting to take passengers to Berlin. We decided to use public transport (a day ticket on Rostock trams, buses, ferries and DB S-Bahn is 4 € compared to about 9 € for ship's shuttle bus). We found a bus from the terminal gates (risking a 40 € fine for travelling without ticket - they are only available from machines (not one at this stop) and the driver did not sell anything). At Dierkower Kreuz we transferred to the excellent local tram system. This has received many new trams since unification, but some older bogie cars with trailers still operate all day (although not on routes through the Hauptbahnhof subway).

We visited various sites in Rostock before travelling from the Hauptbahnhof to Warnemünde on the S-Bahn, to photograph other visiting cruise ships (AIDAaura, Crystal Symphony and Regatta) plus ferries to Denmark and Sweden and the local boats engaged in the Grosse Hafenrundfahrt trade. We returned on S-Bahn line 183, using new low floor diesel sets. We tried to pick this up at Dierkower HP (=Haltepunkt - park & ride?) tram terminus. Despite being shown as an interchange, there were no signs for the S-Bahn, and various locals when shown the S-Bahn map either professed no knowledge of any trains, or claimed that trains no longer ran. We had to catch the tram back to the Hauptbahnhof and travel from there. Dierkower S-Bahn station consisted on an ancient weed-strewn platform and small concrete, graffiti-emblazoned shelter, with a small track disappearing into the bushes towards the tram terminus. It is not surprising that the locals knew nothing about it. Perhaps the service is newly reinstated.

I presume that four visiting cruise ships is unusual for Rostock/Warnemünde, since this day was nominated as one of six Rostock 'Port Parties' with live music and entertainments at the Warnemünde cruise terminal. In addition, nine (!) local excursion boats filled with passengers to escort Celebrity Constellation (and presumably the other ships) out of the harbour. It was an amazing spectacle with lots of siren blowing, singing and cheering from ships large and small. It exceeded most final sailings or new arrivals that I have seen - quite extraordinary. Unfortunately, since we left at 9:30pm, I have no inages of this event. The last such party is on 16th September for the end of the cruising season with Norwegian Dream. Next Page...
