1912 she was transferred to CSA, and in 1919 was renamed Alesia

La Champagne
(1886-1915
- 7087gt)
La Champagne was built for CGT in 1885. As
built she had two short funnels and four masts, running between Le Havre and
New York. Original engines were triple-expansion, giving a speed of 17.5
knots. In 1896 La Champagne was converted to quadruple expansion
engines and new boilers. The height of the funnels was raised and only two
masts were retained.
In 1905 La Champagne was replaced on
the New York run by La Savoie. La Champagne was given an
extra promenade deck and placed on the Mexico run from St.Nazaire. In 1915,
whilst on charter to Sud-Atlantique, she ran aground approaching St Nazaire
and broke her back. She was broken up.
I have no postcards of the
ship with four masts, before rebuilding in 1896.
