	This page shows images of the ZSG (Zürichsee Schifffahrtsgesellschaft) paddle steamer Stadt Rapperswil of 1914, using historic postcards and recent images. Stadt Rapperswil was built in 1914 by Escher-Weiss of Zürich. She is very similar to Stadt Zürich but can be easily distinguished by the impressive cross-tree on the foremast, and a different design of paddle box. She is 60m long and carries 750 passengers. Her engines were also built by Escher-Weiss and generate 368kW (500hp).

Stadt Rapperswil was built in 1914 by Escher-Weiss of Zürich. She is very similar to Stadt Zürich but can be easily distinguished by the impressive cross-tree on the foremast, and a different design of paddle box. She is 60m long and carries 750 passengers. Her engines were also built by Escher-Weiss and generate 368kW (500hp).

In the 1980s the ZSG paddle steamers would often not be used if there was even a hint of possible rain. As can be seen in some of the images below, they would remain at Wollishofen on some glorious sunny days when they were scheduled to run. I visited a number of times before I managed to travel on them. In the 1990s things became better. Recently they have removed the 'steamer logo' from timetables, much to the annoyance of some enthusiasts. However my 2011 day visit in generally poor weather saw both vessels in use as hoped for.

Both ships looked a bit tired internally in the 1980s, but subsequent renovations have made them to the level of other Swiss restorations. I really enjoy travelling on these steamers. They have a very good atmosphere, possibly because their passengers are more likely to be locals rather than rowdy tourists, some of which manage to board the vessel without even realising that they are on a 'side-wheeler' (in their home vernacular).
