This page shows images of the Zürich fleet of
ZSG
(Zürichsee Schifffahrtsgesellschaft) from visits between 1984
and 2017. The current fleet
includes two magnificent paddle steamer
Stadt
Zürich
and
Stadt
Rapperswil , plus a fleet of impressive motor
vessels both old and very modern, all beautifully maintained.
Thee are fewer tourists on the lake compared to other major
Swiss lakes, but the locals make extensive use of the services
for both commuting and pleasure, and the company runs a wide
variety of special excursions to keep people interested.
Many of the smaller and older vessels in the fleet which run
local circular trips were replaced with five smart new vessels
between 1997-2001. In 2007 a large new triple-deck excursion vessel
Panta Rhei
was delivered, particularly for charter and special trips. Both the
paddle steamers
Stadt
Rapperswil and Stadt
Zürich have received
substantial investment in recent years and are magnificent vessels
to travel on. The motor vessels are also impressive and well worth
investigating.

Stadt Zürich was built in 1909 by
Escher-Weiss of Zürich. She is very similar to the later Stadt
Rapperswil but can be easily distinguished by the Rapperswil's
impressive cross-tree on the foremast, and a different design of paddle box.
She is 60m long and carries 750 passengers. Her engines were also built by
Escher-Weiss and generate 368kW (500hp). She is due to have her engines
fully dismantled for maintenance during the winter 2011/12 for the first
time since building in 1909. I first visited Zürich in 1984 to see the
paddle steamers, whilst on a holiday based in Luzern. ZSG seemed quite
reluctant in the 1980s to use the steamers. The timetables said that one
would operate on Wednesdays but sadly neither paddler was in use, despite
the glorious weather visible in my images.

(1914- )
Stadt Rapperswil was built in 1914 by
Escher-Weiss of Zürich. She is very similar to Stadt Zürich but can be
easily distinguished by the impressive cross-tree on the foremast, and a
different design of paddle box. She is 60m long and carries 750 passengers.
Her engines were also built by Escher-Weiss and generate 368kW (500hp).

Linth was built in 1952 by Bodanwerft,
Kressbronn, and is the oldest large motor vessel in service on Zürichsee.
She is an extremely impressive three-decked vessel similar to vessels
delivered by the same yard for the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) on Bodensee
(Lake Constance), of which many have now been scrapped. Linth has
been beautifully maintained and is a pleasure to sail on. She carries 1000
passengers, is 54m long and is powered by twin MAN diesels each of 365Kw
(485hp). She has an impressive beam of 11.6m, almost the same as the
paddlers, allowing a spacious promenade deck around the outside of the main
saloons.

Limmat was built in 1958 by Bodanwerft, at
Kressbronn on Bodensee, and is another fine motor vessel delivered from this
yard for service on Zürichsee. Limmat carries 700 passengers, is
54m long and is powered by a single MAN diesel of 485Kw (660hp) driving a
single screw, as are the vessels which followed over the next 10 years.

Helvetia was built in 1964 by Bodanwerft, at
Kressbronn on Bodensee. She is the largest vessel in the ZSG fleet, carrying
1200 passengers in 56m long hull which is 12.3m wide. Unlike the Linth,
she does not have a third upper deck, but retains spacious promenade decks
around the saloons. She is powered by a single MAN diesel driving a single
screw, of 635Kw (842hp).

carrying 700 passengers in a shorter 48m x 9.6m hull. She is again powered
by a single MAN diesel driving a single screw, this time of 442Kw (600hp).
