Princesa Teguise (1991- )
Modernisation of the Trasmediterránea fleet began in 1980 when the Jetfoil
Princesa Voladora
entered service in the Canaries. Having a jet foil in the Canaries was a big thing as it saw the beginnings of a maritime shuttle service between the two Canary capitals: Las Palmas & Santa Cruz, in 80 minutes. This ship had a big effect on Canary Island society, raising its quality, and Trasmediterránea consequently decided to buy two more Jetfoil ships in the following two years,
Princesa Guayarmina
and
Princesa Guacimara
. In the summer of 1987, a third route was added to Morro Jable (Fuerteventura).
In 1991, two new Jetfoils were incorporated in the Canaries,
Princesa Dácil
and
Princesa Teguise
, that are currently still serving on the maritime shuttle between the two Canary capitals. The following year, these ships were equipped with sunken object detectors WDA (high speed sonar technology). For more than 20 years, the Jetfoil has served to help the cohesion of the Canary Archipelago in a safe and speedy way. The Jetfoil is the only ship capable of sailing at a sustained speed of 43 knots, which means it always meets its timetable.
