This page shows images of ferries, excursion ships
and trams in Toulon.
Toulon is a city in southern France with a large military harbour on the
Mediterranean coast, with a major French naval base. Located in the
Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur region, Toulon is the capital of the Var
department in the former province of Provence.
The military port of Toulon is the major naval centre on France's
Mediterranean coast, home of the French Navy aircraft carrier Charles De
Gaulle and her battle group. The French Mediterranean Fleet is based in
Toulon.
Military installations surround the Petite Rade at Toulon, with ferry
services to La Seyne, Sablettes and St Mandrier run by Société des Bateaux
à Vapour. A number of steamships ran the
services in the golden age of postcards, but the only vessel identified is
the Kérauden. Services are currently run with modern high speed
launches. I would be interested to know what vessels were used between the
steam ferries and the modern vessels, and also how long the steam ferries
lasted, although at least one post-WW2 postcard shows a steamer still in
existence.
These services all survive in 2010.
The fleet is currently managed by
Réseau Mistral on behalf of the Communauté
d'Agglomération Toulon Provence Méditerranée (TPM). The current fleet of ten
vessels consists of: Lou Gabian, La
Mousco, L'Esquinade,
Lou Roucaou,
Lou Mistrau,
Lou Mérou,
La Rascasse, Lou Soulèu ,
Lou Pichoun,
Fée des Iles (previously
running trips to the Iles d'Hyères), and
Fort de La Prée (previously
running to the Ile de Re).
My thanks to
Stéphane Saissi for the use of his recent images of
Réseau Mistral vessels.

Steamers at Toulon
Military installations surround the Petite Rade at
Toulon, with ferry services to La Seyne, Sablettes and St Mandrier run by
Société des Bateaux à Vapour. Whilst the steam
ferries used are well covered in contemporary postcards, I have found little
information about the vessels themselves. Any assistance would be
appreciated.

Fairmile B Launches at Toulon
A number of ex-Royal Navy Fairmile B launches worked from Toulon
on services to the local islands. Launches owned by the Cie
Provenҫale de Tourisme Maritime included the
Fée des Iles and
Oiseau des Iles. There
was also an
unknown
third Fairmile with a blue
funnel at Toulon at this time.

Modern Ferries at Toulon
I photographed ferries at Toulon in 1999 and 2001. At that time there was a
fleet of older launches, including
Flibustier,
Sirene IV,
Creux St Georges II and
La Mousco, plus three new
1998 ferries
, L'Esquinade,
Lou Roucaou and
Lou Mistrau.
In 2005 the fleet was listed as being the 11 vessels
Creux St Georges II, III
&
V, Flibustier,
La Mousco, Lou Gabian,
Lou Mistrau,
L'Esquinade,
Lou Roucaou,
Lou Mérou and
La Rascasse.
Lou Mérou
and
La Rascasse were
new 2005 ferries similar to the three previous new ferries
L'Esquinade,
Lou Roucaou and
Lou Mistrau but with an
extended open area aft. Since then two further new 2010 vessels have replaced the
remaining older launches. These are
Lou Soulèu and
Lou Pichoun which are
smaller and have a more traditional appearance.
The fleet is currently managed by Réseau Mistral on behalf of the Communauté
d'Agglomération Toulon Provence Méditerranée (TPM). The current fleet of ten
vessels consists of:
Lou Gabian, La
Mousco, L'Esquinade,
Lou Roucaou,
Lou Mistrau,

La Rascasse, Lou Soulèu ,

Fée des Iles (previously
running trips to the Iles d'Hyères), and
Fort de La Prée (previously
running to the Ile de Re).
Creux St Georges II, III &
V,
Flibustier and
Sirene IV have been withdrawn.
