This page shows images of the 760mm gauge
Steyrtalbahn ÖBB narrow gauge
taken in 1974. At this time the Steyrtalbahn was the last 100%
steam-operated ÖBB narrow gauge railway. Diesels had not been provided since
it was due to closed. The Grünberg-Steyr Lokalbahnhof section later became a
preserved railway.
We travelled to the western terminus of the Steyrtalbahn at Klaus on the Linz-Selzthal Pyrhnbahn which was not electrified at the time and largely single track. We had travelled there in a train of four-wheeled coaches hauled by a veteran Class 2045 diesel. When we arrived we discovered that Steyrtalbahn passenger trains now terminated at Grünberg and that a bus would run their in a couple of hours. The Grünberg-Mölln-Klaus section was closed due a bridge being judged unsafe, but to our surprise this did not stop freights running on this section and one arrived at Klaus soon after our arrival. Since a standard gauge Class 052 Kriegslok was also shunting in the yard, we had plenty to keep us interested whilst waiting for the bus. |
