Green Boats

This page shows the excursion boats operated by Green Boats of Falmouth.

Green Boats was the trading name of River Fal & Western Cruises Ltd. Registered in London and incorporated in 1954, it was headed by a Mr. G. Hamilton and offered trips on the Fal, to Percuil and in Falmouth Bay. The local manager was a Bart Moore of Mylor. According to Colin Hosford, his father worked for Graham Hamilton in London where he owned a garage and machine shop near Hyde Park Corner (Wimbush and Metal Machinists). Colin spent many summer holidays in Mylor where his father worked with Bart Moore on the Green Boats fleet. He believes that their holidays were subsidised by his father’s work on the Green Boats.Photos by Colin's parents are shown below.

Green Boats began operations with three launches, Tamar, Temptress (1) and Gondolier. The first two were ex-Admiralty vessels, of which a number operated in Falmouth at this time. The Gondolier had previously run locally with Victory Pleasure Launches between 1947 and 1950. Green Boats also acquired another ex-Admiralty boat, Skylark II, in 1962 following the death of owner Rodney Newman of Tolverne.

In the 1970s the Green Boats fleet was sold off. Gondolier went to Falmouth owner George Pill. Skylark II and Temptress (1) went initially to another local owner, Bob Rogers, who later sold them to George Pill. George later passed Temptress (1) to brother Kenneth Pill, who used her for fishing trips until 1985. She then went to Millbrook owners and later ran in Plymouth as Condor. Skylark II was also sold to a Plymouth owner in 1984.

Gondolier

(Green Boats)

Gondolier at joined the Green Boats fleet at the start, having previously served locally with Victory Pleasure Launches between 1947 and 1950. When the Green Boats fleet was disposed of in the early 1970s, Gondolier went to Falmouth owner George Pill. A Gondolier ran in the Isles of Scilly between 1957 and 1968, although I am not sure if this was the same boat.
