Dolphin World - Gibraltar
Brixham Belle
I was looking for something new and interesting to do in Gibraltar, having visited many times before on cruise ships. I remembered that the beautiful Devon excursion vessel Brixham Belle (built as a 'gentleman's motor yacht') had gone out to Gibraltar in 2001 to run dolphin trips. A few minutes googling and I had booked two places on her afternoon trip. She docks 10 minutes from the cruise terminal at the old passenger terminal, adjacent to the coach park. This was a lovely trip on a delightful boat, and is recommended to anyone who visits Gibraltar. It also allows images to be taken of your own cruise ship (not usually possible in Gibraltar) and the rock itself. For shipping enthusiasts you also get close enough to photograph the veteran ferries sailing out of Algeciras to Africa.

Dolphin World
Brixham Belle in Devon
(Built: 1960)
Steve Powell writes:-
Brixham Belle
was built in 1960 as a 'Gentleman's Motor Yacht' in Cowes and named
George Henry.
The gentleman concerned could not pay for her on completion and the builder converted her to a passenger excursion boat in order to sell her on quickly and cut his losses. She was 48 gross tons and carried 120 passengers.
Brixham Belle
was operated out of Brixham for many years by Ernie Cudd and family who mainly ran excursions to Dartmouth and up the river Dart during the day and 'Illuminations Cruises' around Torbay after dark. She was much loved by holiday makers and locals alike. After Ernie retired, she stayed in the family for a while with his son-in-law (I think) as skipper.
Eventually she was sold to Peter Scott and became the founding vessel for his 'Brixham Belle Cruises'. He kept her until he bought
Brixham Belle II
(formerly
Devon Princess III
then
Torbay Princess II
and now
Western Lady VII
). She is now in Gibraltar, still in daily use on dolphin watching trips and still named
Brixham Belle
.
