Aurora of 2000

Aurora Page 2A: Photos of First Southampton Arrival
(16th April 2000)

Aurora was P&O Cruises' second new ship, entering service on Monday 1st May 2000, when she left on a maiden cruise to the Mediterranean. This was due to be followed by three more "maiden cruises" to the Canaries, Lisbon and Norway. In the event, the first cruise was curtailed after 18 hours and the second cruise was cancelled.

Aurora is 76000 tons, and carries 1874 passengers (1950 max) and 850 crew. The pictures below show her maiden arrival in Southampton on 16th April 2000, from the builders Meyer Werft, Papenburg, Germany. She arrived the same day as the Tall Ships left Southampton at start of an Atlantic 'race'. Pictures of these are included on Aurora - Page 2B, since they were all part of the scene at Aurora's arrival. The pictures on this page were taken by Ian and Margaret Boyle.

Photos of first Southampton arrival
(16th April 2000)

The first series of pictures were taken from the Red Funnel ferry Red Osprey on the 11.30am departure from East Cowes to Southampton. Aurora had anchored off Cowes overnight, not to the east of the Isle of Wight as planned. This was possibly due to inclement weather; cross-channel ferry services had been disrupted the day before due to strong winds.

The next series of pictures were taken from the Red Funnel ferry Red Eagle on the 2.00pm departure from Southampton back to East Cowes.
As you can see from the pictures, the fire hoses of a tug rather obscured the view as we approached Aurora.
