Stena Britannica - Wickersham - Viking 6 - Goelo - Sol Olympia - Moby Dream - Sardegna Bella

This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of the Viking Lines ferry Viking 6.

Viking 6 was built as the Stena Line vessel Stena Britannica in 1967. Her sistership was the Stena Germanica. Her career with Stena was short, and between 1968-74 she served as the Wickersham in Alaska. Sally bought her in 1974, and renamed her the Viking 6. She was used on the Stockholm-Helsinki route. Between 1980-82 she was chartered to Brittany Ferries as Goelo. She then served in the Mediterranean under various owners until 2001, when she was sold for scrap.

Stena Britannica
(Stena Line: 1967-68)

The Stena Line vessel Stena Britannica was built in 1967, as the second of a pair of sisterships built for a new Kiel-Gothenburg service started by Stena Line. Her sister was the Stena Germanica, delivered in the same year, and both were built by A/S Langesunds Mek, in Sandefjord, Norway. When Stena Britannica was delivered, it was considered too soon to add a second ship to the Kiel-Gothenburg service. Stena Britannica was used between Gothenburg and Frederikshavn for 4 months, before being sold to the State of Alaska in April 1968. Between 1968-74 she served on the Alaska Marine Highway as the Wickersham. When purpose-built tonnage arrived on the Alaska service, she was sold to Rederi AB Sally, who renamed her the Viking 6.

Sun Express (Sally UK: 1985)

Viking 6 was built as the Stena Line vessel Stena Britannica in 1967. Her career with Stena was short, and between 1968-74 she served in Alaska as the Wickersham. Rederi AB Sally bought her in 1974, and renamed her the Viking 6. She was used on the Stockholm-Helsinki route. Between 1980-82 she was chartered to Brittany Ferries as Goelo. She returned to Sally operation in 1982, when as Viking 6 again, she served between Ramsgate and Dunkerque, after a charter to North Sea Ferries. In December 1982, Viking 6 was sold to Cypriot-based Sol Lines (Takis Solomondis of Limassol) for a route between Venice and Haifa as Sol Olympia. This company failed in 1985, and the ship reverted to Rederi AB Sally ownership, initially as Sun Express, and later as Viking 6 again. She served with Moby Lines until 2001, when she was sold for scrap.

Moby Dream - Sardegna Bella
(Moby Lines: 1986-2001)

Moby Dream had a varied career before acquisition by NAVARMA. She was built in 1967 as the Stena Britannica, sold to Alaska in 1968 as the Wickersham, then to Rederi AB Sally in 1974 as Viking 6. Sally chartered her to Brittany Ferries for two years as Goelo, then sold her to Sol Lines, serving as Sol Olympia. She was acquired by Moby Lines in 1986, and renamed Moby Dream. In 1994 she was passed on to a Moby subsidiary, Sardegna Lines, as Sardegna Bella. The Sardegna Bella was sold for demolition by Moby Lines in 2001 after having been laid up in Livorno for more than a year.
