Vicinal (SNCV) - De Lijn
Steam Trams
Initially the Vicinal tramways were operated with steam trams and
trailers. They also pulled freight trains. The Vicinal had a wide
variety of steam tram types. In 1925 there were 838 Vicinal tram engines
throughout Belgium.

De Panne-Adinkerke 600mm Gauge Tramway
l'Ancetre d'Adele
In addition to the Vicinal
tramways, there were three independent short horse-drawn lines operating
in the 1890s:- De
Panne-Adinkerke, De Panne-St Idesbald and Koksijde Dorp to Koksijde Bad.
Another horse tram line linked Knokke beach to the Brugge-Heist tramway.
Most of these horse tramways became part of the Vicinal system and by
1914 only the 600mm gauge De Panne-Adinkerke tramway remained horse
worked. The line was 3.7km long linking Adinkerke Station with the beach
at De Panne, passing through the town via the Avenue de la Mer. There
were two passing loops at Eglise St-Pierre and Duinhoek. the coaches
were tiny bogie vehicles with cramped longitudinal seating. At busy
times all six or seven horse trams would await a train and then proceed
in convoy towards the beach. The tramway was known as 'l'Ancetre
d'Adele'.
This tramway was heavily used by the allies during the First World War,
using small motor tractors to transport materials to the front. After the war,
the line re-opened, initially using an ex-WD Simplex. The proprietor
then acquired two small steam engines named Laura and Adele.
From 1928, Fordson rail tractors were used. The De
Panne-Adinkerke 600mm gauge line remained in use until 1932 using these
converted tractors which possibly used the steam loco frames with a
trailing bogie. The body looked a bit like a garden shed. After closure
it was taken over by the Vicinal and
converted to electrified metre gauge.

Knokke Horse Tramway
SA du Tramway de Knokke-sur-Mer
In 1904 the SA du Tramway de Knokke-sur-Mer opened a horse tramway linking Knokke beach to the Brugge-Heist tramway.
It was probably metre gauge. Its success was such that it was replaced
with a Vicinal electric line in 1912.
