Sylvania
Sylvania - Fairwind - Sitmar Fairwind - Dawn Princess - Albatros
This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of the
Cunard
liner
Sylvania
, which had a long subsequent career with
Sitmar Line
and
Princess Cruises
. She was one of four sisterships built by Cunard between 1954-57:-
Saxonia
-
Ivernia
-
Carinthia
-
Sylvania
Sylvania
was built for
Cunard Line
in 1957, for secondary North Atlantic services.
Sylvania
was sold to
Sitmar Line
and became their
Fairwind
in 1968 after rebuilding. She was briefly renamed
Sitmar Fairwind
in 1988, before becoming the
Dawn Princess
when
Princess Cruises
acquired Sitmar. Princess sold her back to the Vlasov Group V-Ships (ie: the previous owners of Sitmar) in 1993, and Phoenix operated her under charter as
Albatros (1)
until 2004, when she was sold for scrap. She was replaced by
Albatros (2)
originally the
Royal Viking Sea
.

In later years
Sylvania
was used primarily for cruising, although she did not receive the major conversions to cruising of sisters
Carmania
and
Franconia
. From 22 February 1967 until 10 May, British Hovercraft Corporation 024 was chartered to the Cunard Line. She was carried on the deck of the
Sylvania
and supplemented the cruise by running trips from the ship to Athens, Beirut, Istanbul, Tripoli and Lisbon. The experiment was not repeated. A more complete history of this hovercraft will be added later.

Dawn Princess
(Princess Cruises: 1988-93)
Sitmar's
Fairwind
and
Fairsea
became the
Dawn Princess
and
Fair Princess
within the Princess Cruises fleet. Both ships were eventually displaced by new tonnage, and
Dawn Princess
was subsequently sold back to the Vlasov Group (owners of Sitmar) and has since operated as
Albatros
.
Fair Princess
was moved to serve the Australian market, replacing the
Fairstar
which was scrapped in 1997. She was in turn replaced by
Sky Princess, ex-Fairsky
.
