Chalkwell & Leigh Excursion Boats

In the 1950s two motorboats operated from Old Leigh Beach, the Golden Spray and the White Swan (each about 20 feet long). From Chalkwell Beach the sailing vessels Coronation, Peggy (later renamed Skylark) and Sunbeam remained out of a pre-war fleet of about six. The first two (about 27 feet long and the other 25 feet) were all retired by 1967, the Coronation and Sunbeam being converted to sailing yachts with cabins and the Skylark remaining open but in private use only.

Skylark (the last to retire) was built by Cole & Wiggins in Old Leigh in 1947 as Peggy to replace a previous Peggy lost at Dunkirk. 1966 was her last year in public service She sailed on privately, still open decked, until about 1990, then laid up on land for years more until finally being “cremated” in about 1998 after rot was discovered in her mahogany hull.
