CP - Chemins de Fer de Provence

The Compagnie des Chemins de fer du Sud de la France (SF), built lines Nice-Digne and Nice-Draguignan-Meyrargues, before becoming in 1925, more modestly, the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer de Provence (CP). The Gare du Sud was the Nice terminus for these lines.

Work on the Gare du Sud began in 1890 and finished in 1892 by Prosper Bobin for the Compagnie des Chemins de fer du Sud de la France. The station front is rather monumental and impressive with a high front, with two pavilions to the side. A tall trainshed covered the tracks that went to Grasse and Puget-Théniers. The line was extended to Annot and Digne in 1911. The rooftop was the previously used on the pavillion of Russia and Austria-Hungary at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris.

After World War II, the line to Meyrargues closed and the entire network almost followed it. However, the Nice-Digne line survived. The Chemins de Fer de Provence closed the impressive Gare du Sud in December 1991 and moved its terminating services to Nice CP. Ownership of the station building was transferred from l'Etat Français to Nice Municipality. Amidst public outcry, the station was almost dismantled but public demonstrations saved it. Work has finally started on the site, although it appears that only the facade will be retained in the new civic complex, containing the town hall, library etc.

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild
Villa Ile de France

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is a French seaside palazzo constructed between 1905 and 1912 at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on the French Riviera by Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild (1864-1934). She named the Villa Ile de France after a voyage on the French Line vessel of the same name, although they no longer use this name in publicity. It was designed by the Belgian architect Aaron Messiah. A member of the prominent Rothschild banking family and the wife of the wealthy Russian banker Baron de Ephrussi, Béatrice de Rothschild built her rose-colored villa on a promontory on the isthmus of Cap Ferrat overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The Baroness filled the mansion with antique furniture, Old Master paintings, sculptures, objets d'art, and assembled an extensive collection of rare porcelain. On her death in 1934, the Baroness gifted the property and its collections to the Académie des Beaux Arts division of the Institut de France and it is now open to public visitation.
