Isle of Man Steam Packet Company

Page 3: 1915-1939

This page is one of a series devoted to postcards and photographs of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company (IOMSPCo). This page covers the inter-war years, when services were bolstered by the purchase of many old railway steamers, plus five magnificent new steamers (of which only two survived the Second World War).

An alphabetical list of ships shown on this page is shown below. The Table beneath gives links to complete history pages on selected individual ships on this page ( a complete list is shown on the IOMSPCo Header Page). Below the table is a Fleet List in chronological order.

Viper (1920)
Snaefell (4) (1920-1945)

In 1906, G & J Burns replaced the paddlesteamer Adder with the extremely fine turbine steamer Viper, also built by Fairfields of Govan. She achieved 22knots, with a service speed of 21knots, compared to 20knots and 18knots respectively for the Adder. Viper operated successfully until the service was suspended for the duration of WW1. She resumed in 1919, but was sold to the Isle of Man Steam Packet Co in 1920, since the troubles in Ireland had adversely affected traffic levels. She always carried the black funnels of G & J Burns. She was renamed Snaefell (4) in IOMSPCo service, and ran until 1945, including the services throughout WW2 when other IOMSPCo vessels were requisitioned. By the end of the war, she was worn out, and sold for scrap.

Not the best photo in the world, but included here because this was the first ship picture that I ever took, at the age of about nine. It shows Ben-my-Chree (4) heading into Liverpool, and is seen from the outward bound Snaefell on a day trip to Llandudno. It was also my first trip with the IOMSPCo, although I had previously taken excursions with the Liverpool & North Wales company and MacBraynes. The picture must be between 1963-65, since the IOMSPCo did not operate to Llandudno until L&NWSS services ceased in 1962 and the Ben-my-Chree (4) finished in 1965. Unfortunately I never managed to travel on the "Ben".
