Elbe-Fähre - Elbe-Ferry

This page gives a short history of car ferry services across the mouth of the River Elbe. There are alphabetical lists of companies and ships shown on this page. Below these is the chronological fleet list.

Brief History of Elbe Car Ferries:-
The first modern car ferry service across the mouth of the Elbe was started by Elbe-Fähre in 1969, using the purpose-built ferries Schleswig-Holstein and Niedersachsen. The service ran between Cuxhaven and Brunsbüttel, and passed to HADAG Seetouristik und Fährdienst AG in 1974, but closed in 1981.

Elbe-Ferry re-opened the historic link between Cuxhaven and Brunsbuttel. This link could save considerable mileage compared to the long journey through Hamburg. The operators acquired three 1960s DSB ferries, and issued three attractive cards of the larger two. Unfortunately, services ceased on 9th March 2001, and the three ships were offered for sale.

(Elbe-Ferry: 1999-2001)

Jochen Steffen was built in 1960 as the car ferry Prinsesse Anne-Marie for DSB's route from Kalundborg to Arhus. She was later transferred to Helsingborg-Helsingor.

Hinrich Wilhelm Kopf
(Elbe-Ferry: 1999-2001)

Hinrich Wilhelm Kopf was built in 1964 as the car ferry Prinsesse Elisabeth for DSB's route from Kalundborg to Arhus. She is near sister to Prinsesse Anne-Marie, and was transferred with her to Helsingborg-Helsingor.

An unidentified photographic card of Prinsesse Elisabeth is shown below, with original stepped hull line.
An attractive brochure of the ship was issued by ScandLines: Front - Rear

Wilhelm Kaisen
(Elbe-Ferry: 1999-2001)

Wilhelm Kaisen was built in 1967 as the car and train ferry Najaden on the Helsingborg-Helsingor route. When replaced by larger ferries, including the Prinsesse Elisabeth and Prinsesse Anne-Marie above, she was moved to the Bojden-Fynshav route. She was been renamed Wilhelm Kaisen by Elbe-Ferry, but I have not seen any postcards.

This is a Trojaborg card serial number BOJ2.
