A steam ferry service ran for many years across the
Rade de Brest from Brest to Le Fret. For many years this was run by the
steamer Crozon. In recent
years this service has been run by

Brest - Penfeld River Bridges
The Port Militaire in Brest is situated along the
banks of the Penfeld River (although it has substantially expanded to the
west along the Rade de Brest in the 20th Century). There are two major
bridge crossings over the Penfeld within the port area, the Pont de
Recouvrance and the Pont de l'Harteloire further upriver. Both these bridges
were built to replace interesting bridges damaged in World War 2.
The Pont National was a very impressive swing bridge opened in 1861, linking
the rue de Siam to Recouvrance, near the Tour Tanguy. It was destroyed by
Allied bombardment in 1944 and replaced by the Pont de Recouvrance after the
war. Opened on 17th July 1954, the Pont de Recouvrance was the largest
vertical lift bridge in Europe from its construction until the opening of
the Pont Gustave-Flaubert in 2008.
The Pont de l’Harteloire is on the site of a naval transporter bridge
destroyed during the Second World War. This transporter bridge had
originally been assembled at Bizerta, Tunisia, in 1898, but was moved to
Brest in 1909. It was also damaged in allied bombing in 1944 and was
demolished in 1947.

A ferry ran for many years across the Elorn River to
the west of Brest at Le Passage near Plougastel. Originally using sailing
vessels, these were later replaced by steam. A steam chain ferry was also
installed. Both were replaced by the Plougastel Bridge, or Albert-Louppe
Bridge, built over the Elorn River to the west of the Passage ferry,
connecting Plougastel-Daoulas and Le Relecq-Kerhuon.
Construction on the Plougastel Bridge started in 1926 and was completed on
9th October 1930. Part of it was destroyed by the German army in 1944. It
was reopened after widening five years later. Between 1991 and 1994 another
bridge, the Pont de l'Iroise, was built parallel to this bridge. Today the
Plougastel carries tractor, pedestrian and bicycle traffic and is a landmark
on the route of the Paris–Brest–Paris bicycle event. The Plougastel Bridge
is a concrete arch bridge, and has a double deck structure.
