Page 2: Trasmed Conventional Ferries 1966-90

This is the second in a series of pages devoted to postcards and photographs of Trasmediterránea. An alphabetical list of ships shown on this page is shown below. There is then a list by Class Name. The Table beneath gives links to complete history pages on selected individual ships. Below the table is a Fleet List in chronological order.

Other Trasmediterránea Pages:- Page 1, Page 3, Page 4

Trasmediterránea had introduced their first car ferry on the Algeciras-Ceuta route in 1951, but more were not built for the Canaries and Balearic routes until the Albatros Class of 1966. The fleet was replaced again from the mid-1970s with the elegant Canguro Class, some of which are still in service.

Modernisation of the Trasmediterránea fleet began in 1980 when the Jetfoil Princesa Voladora entered service in the Canaries. Having a jetfoil in the Canaries was important as it introduced a 80 minute maritime shuttle service between the two Canary capitals: Las Palmas & Santa Cruz. This vessel had a big effect on Canary Island society, raising its quality, and Trasmediterránea consequently decided to buy two more Jetfoil ships in the following two years, Princesa Guayarmina and Princesa Guacimara. In the summer of 1987, a third route was added to Morro Jable (Fuerteventura). Since 1990, the fleets have been replaced again with modern multi-purpose, ro-pax and ro-ro ferries, whilst vehicle-carrying fast catamarans and monohull ferries have been used since 1995.

Juan March
(1966-1985)
(Albatros class)

9977grt - 130.64m long - 11769kW=21 knots - 1000 passengers/500 berths - 100 cars

Juan March was built in 1966 by Union Naval de Levante S.A., Valencia, for Trasmediterránea services from Spain to the Balearic Islands. Juan March was the first of two Albatros Class ferries from these builders, the other being Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Two further sisters were built by Sociedad Espanola de Construccion Naval, Bilbao, Santa Cruz De Tenerife and Ciudad de Compostela. The Albatros Class had berths for 500 passengers and carried 100 cars, which were side loaded. They could not carry freight vehicles, which limited their use in later years. The Albatros Class were the main Trasmediterránea ships on the Canaries and Balearic routes for about 10 years until the Tiburon Class and Canguro Class ferries arrived in the late 1970s. They were then used on secondary routes, as relief ships, and to open new routes until 1985, when all except were Ciudad de Compostela sold.

Juan March operated out of Valencia until 1985 when she was sold to Sol Mediterranean as the Sol Christina, serving Piraeus-Rhodes-Limassol-Alexandria. the following year she was renamed Kypros Star for Opale Lines, and in 1987-88 she was chartered to Adriatica for their Brindisi-Patras service. In 1989 she was sold for conversion to a cruise ship (535 passengers), reappearing as the Ocean Majesty of Majestic Cruises. In 1994 she was renamed Olympic, and then chartered to Epirotiki Lines who named her Homeric. In 1995 she became the Ocean Majesty again.

9977grt - 130.64m long - 11769kW=21 knots - 1000 passengers/500 berths - 100 cars

Santa Cruz De Tenerife was built in 1966 by Sociedad Espanola de Construccion Naval, Bilbao, for Trasmediterránea services from Spain to the Canary Islands. Santa Cruz De Tenerife was the first of two Albatros Class ferries from these builders, the other being Ciudad de Compostela. Two further sisters were built by Union Naval de Levante S.A., Valencia, Juan March and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The Albatros Class had berths for 500 passengers and carried 100 cars, which were side loaded. They could not carry freight vehicles, which limited their use in later years. They were then used on secondary routes, as relief ships, and to open new routes until 1985, when all except were Ciudad de Compostela sold.

Santa Cruz De Tenerife operated out of Valencia until 1985 when she was sold to Sol Mediterranean as the Sol Olympia II, serving Piraeus-Rhodes-Limassol. However, she was laid up the following year after an engine room fire, and was broken up in Turkey in 1987.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was built in 1967 by Union Naval de Levante S.A., Valencia, for Trasmediterránea services from Spain to the Canary Islands. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was the second of two Albatros Class ferries from these builders, the other being Juan March. They were then used on secondary routes, as relief ships, and to open new routes until 1985, when all except were Ciudad de Compostela sold.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was rebuilt as the cruise ship Crown del Mare by her original builders in 1986. She was chartered to to Crown Cruise Line until delivery of their Crown Monarch from the same builders, but was then laid up in Barcelona for 4 years from 1991-94. She was then bought back by Trasmediterránea, and put in service with a new subsidiary Royal Hispania as the Don Juan.

Ciudad de Compostela was built in 1967 by Sociedad Espanola de Construccion Naval, Bilbao, for Trasmediterránea services from Spain to the Balearic Islands. Ciudad de Compostela was the second of two Albatros Class ferries from these builders, the other being Santa Cruz De Tenerife. They were then used on secondary routes, as relief ships, and to open new routes.

Ciudad de Compostela opened a new summer-only route from 1982 from Sete-Palma de Mallorca-Ibiza. Ciudad de Compostela was the last Albatros Class ship to leave the Trasmediterránea fleet, since she acted as reserve ship for many years. She was sold to Maltese owners in 1992, and served as European Star, then Saray Star. She caught fire and sank in June 1994 whilst on a voyage from Piraeus to Venice.

The Canguro Class

The first two ships of the Canguro Class were ordered by the Ybarra Line, and Cabo San Sebastian entered service with them in 1972 between Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, followed by the Cabo San Jorge in 1976. The next two ships, Ciudad De Badajoz and Ciudad De Sevilla were delivered straight to Trasmediterránea in 1979 and 1980 respectively. In 1981, the Ybarra sisters Cabo San Sebastian and Cabo San Jorge were also transferred to Trasmediterránea, becoming the Ciudad De Palma and Ciudad De Santa Cruz De La Palma. Confusingly, these two ships Ciudad De Palma and Ciudad De Santa Cruz De La Palma appear to have exchanged names soon afterwards, presumably because they swapped service areas and received the names appropriate to their new itineraries. Two further ships, Ciudad De Salamanca and Ciudad De Valencia entered service in 1982 and 1984, making a class of six. These six ships maintained most of Trasmediterránea's long distance services for almost 20 years, and withdrawals have only started recently. The oldest ship, Ciudad De Santa Cruz De La Palma (2), was sold in 1998, and the next two deliveries, Ciudad De Palma (3) and Ciudad De Badajoz, are currently available for sale. Note: Canguro=Kangaroo

She was used on Trasmediterránea services from Barcelona to the Balearic Islands, and later Almeira-Mellila and Malaga-Mellila. Ciudad De Badajoz is currently (2003) available for sale.

She later returned to balearic Isles services. In 1998, Ciudad de Santa Cruz de la Palma was sold to Lignes Maritimes du Detroit and renamed Beni Ansar for a service between Nador and Almeira. In 2000 Beni Ansar was sold to Linee Lauro and renamed Donatella D'Abundo for a route between La Spezia-Naples-Tunis. Linee Lauro relaunched itself as Medmar in 2002.

The first two ships of the Canguro Class were ordered by the Ybarra Line, and the second of these entered service as the Cabo San Jorge in 1976. A third ship Cabo San Martin was also ordered, but I assume this was delivered straight to Trasmediterránea. Cabo San Jorge was transferred to Trasmediterránea in 1981 as the Ciudad de Santa Cruz de la Palma and renamed again the following year as Ciudad de la Palma, for use on Canary Islands services. She later moved to Balearic services. Ciudad de la Palma is currently (2003) available for sale.
