Page 1: Overview

This page is devoted to postcards and photographs of Brussels tramways, operated by the Société des Transports Intercommunaux de Bruxelles (STIB). In Dutch the title is the Maatschappij voor het Intercommunaal Vervoer te Brussel (MIVB). In general I will use French place names, since French is the primary language in all communes. This page gives a brief overview of the different tram varieties in service.

Type 7000

The 4-axle PCC cars were built by BN between 1951 and 1971 and were numbered 7000-7171. The body design was based on the Swiss Standard Trams used in Zurich, Geneva, etc. Withdrawal of the class commenced in 1983, and 27 vehicles remained in service in 2009, based at Woluwe and used on routes 39 and 44 on Mondays to Fridays. The cars are single-ended but with backup controllers at at the rear - these are needed at the route 39 terminus at Ban Eik where they is a turning-Y. They have 32 seats and take 68 standing passengers. These trams used original or second hand PCC bogies, as did 6-axle car 7500. Subsequent designs had BN-designed bogies.

Type 7500

7500 was delivered as a prototype by BN in 1962, originally numbered 7501. She is a single-ended 8-axle articulated car and was owned by her builders until 1970. She received many modifications which were incorporated into production vehicles delivered in 1971-72, and originally numbered 7501-7598 (7501 having been renumbered 7500 in 1970). 7500 remains in the fleet as a unique vehicle based at Woluwe and used on routes 39 and 44. 7500 has 43 seats and takes 173 standing passengers.

Type 7700

The 7700 series 6-axle cars were delivered by BN from 1971 and are developments of the 7500 prototype. Original deliveries were numbered 7501-7598 and were single-ended. From 1972 numbers 7801-7830 were built as double-ended cars. The original deliveries were converted into double-ended cars in 1981-86. All cars were renumbered into the 7700 series. They have 36 seats and take 116 standing passengers. Whilst previous designs used PCC bogies, subsequent BN designs used thier own design.
