This page gives an overview of recent trams which have run in Amsterdam. More detailed pages on recent tram designs are linked below.

GVB is a tram network in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The network dates back to 1875. Since 1943, it has been operated by municipal public transport operator GVB, which also runs the Amsterdam metro and the city bus and ferry services. The Amsterdam Tram is the largest tram network in the Netherlands and one of the largest in Europe.

The trams on the network run on standard gauge track. Since 1900, they have been powered by electricity, at 600 V DC. At the terminus station of almost every tram route is a turning loop, so that the route can be operated by unidirectional trams. The only exception is Amstelveen Binnenhof, one of the termini of route 5, which must therefore be served by bidirectional vehicles.

As of 2015, there are 15 tram routes. The network comprises a total of 80.5 kilometres (50.0 mi) of route, and 200 kilometres (120 mi) of track. The fleet consists of 216 trams, of which 20 are bidirectional for use on the loop-less route 5.

Beijnes Cars 1G - 7G

The Amsterdam articulated trams 1G to 7G, also known as 'bolkoppen', were built between 1957 and 1968 built by Beijnes (in full:- Koninklijke Fabriek van Rijtuigen en Spoorwagens J.J. Beijnes). Later deliveries were built by Siemens AG, Werkspoor & DÜWAG.
Ref: Wikipedia

1G Trams:-
The Amsterdam designed tram type had a streamlined car body of Beijnes with all modern technical equipment such as a pantograph (four legs, later replaced by a two-leg with double contact strips), powerful motors and a large line route display with the traditional line colour . The first 1957 series of these gray-white trams, 551-575, started operating from Havenstraat depot on the lines 1 and 2 because they were not suitable for the narrow Leidsestraat. Further trams 576-587 were in delivered 1959. To increase the capacity in the short term, trams 552-587 were given centre sections built by DÜWAG in 1973/74 in Düsseldorf (Beijnes and Werkspoor had both closed). The trams were renumbered 851-875 & 876-887.

Linke-Hoffman-Busch Cars 9G (780-804) & 10G (805-816)

The Amsterdam articulated trams 9G and 10G, known as 'Blokkendozen' (building blocks), are two series of a total of 37 trams built from 1979 to 1981 the German manufacturer Linke-Hofmann-Busch for deployment at the Amsterdam tram network of the CFP. At the time, they would be the last three-axle replace what eventually proved unfeasible. Between 2004 and 2015 they were the oldest serviceable trams, last running in December 2015.  Ref: Wikipedia

Amsterdam Metro

The Amsterdam Metro (Dutch: Amsterdamse metro) is a mixed rapid transit and light rail system in Amsterdam, and its surrounding municipalities Amstelveen, Diemen, and Ouder-Amstel in the Netherlands. The network is owned by the city of Amsterdam and operated by municipal public transport company GVB which also operates trams, ferries, and local buses. The metro system consists of four routes, with a total length of 42.5 kilometres, and serves 52 stations.

Three routes start at Amsterdam Centraal: Routes 53 and 54 connect the city centre with the suburban residential towns of Diemen, Duivendrecht, and the Amsterdam Zuidoost borough in the southeast, while Route 51 connects the city centre with the city of Amstelveen in the south. Route 50 connects the south-eastern borough to the western part of the city without crossing the city centre. A fifth route, Route 52, running from the northern borough to the south, will be added to the system once the new North-South Line is completed in 2018.

The original, first-generation fleet consisted of types M1, M2 and M3, designed as four-axle, two-car sets manufactured by the German firm Linke-Hofmann-Busch and delivered between 1973 and 1980. The entire fleet of M1-M3 trains was gradually taken out of service permanently from 2012 to 2015, being replaced by the modern M5 trains. The last unit (No. 23) was retired after a farewell tour on 19 December 2015 and has been preserved as a heritage train. All the other units have been scrapped, with the last of these being scrapped in December 2015.

Ref: Wikipedia

Metro Cars S1/S2/S3/M4

Following the withdrawal of the M1/M2/M3 cars and until the arrival of the new M5 units, the remainder of the fleet consisted of smaller, narrower two section, 6-axle units that could operate both on the main metro network and the light rail ('sneltram') line to Amstelveen. Types S1 and S2, manufactured by La Brugeoise et Nivelles in Belgium, were the first units to be produced for use on this new line. In service since 1990, they currently operate exclusively on Route 51, although they could technically also be used on other lines though this has never been done. These vehicles are equipped with both third rail shoes and pantographs, along with retractable footboards to bridge the gap between the trains and the platforms on sections built to full metro standards. They are due to be withdrawn by 2020 with the conversion of the Amstelveen line to express tram service.  Ref: Wikipedia
