Aller
was one of eleven similar ships built between 1881 and 1890 known as the
Flüsse-Klasse
(River Class). The ships increased in size as the series progressed, from 4500 gross tons (127 m long) for
Elbe
of 1881, to 6963 gross tons (140 m long) for the last ship
Havel
of 1891. The complete series was

(1881 - 4510 grt),
Werra
(1882 - 4815 grt),
Fulda
(1883 - 4814 grt),
Eider
(1884 - 4719 grt),
Ems
(1884 - 4728 grt),
Aller
(1886 - 4964 grt),
Trave
(1886 - 4966 grt),
Saale
(1886 - 4967 grt),
Lahn (1)
(1888 - 5097 grt),
Spree
(1890 - 6963 grt) and
Havel
(1891 - 6963 grt). The ships were all built by John Elder & Co (later Fairfield Shipbuilding) of Glasgow apart from the last two, which were built by AG Vulcan of Stettin.
Aller
entered service between Bremerhaven and New York in 1886. She had two masts removed in 1897. In 1897 she transferred to the Genoa-New York route. She was wrecked near Genoa in 1902.
