1B: Rolling Stock - Diesel Locos & Trailers
  -
  -
  - This page is one of a
series devoted to postcards and photographs of the Chemins de
Fer de Provence (CP), which now runs between Nice and Digne.
This page shows CP rolling stock. CP-Page 2
covers the stations and CP publicity. CP- Page 3 shows larger images of timetables.

  - The Compagnie des Chemins
de fer du Sud de la France (SF), built lines Nice-Digne and Nice-Draguignan-Meyrargues,
before becoming in 1925, more modestly, the Compagnie des Chemins
de Fer de Provence (CP). The Gare du Sud was the Nice terminus
  for these lines.

- Work on the Gare du Sud
began in 1890 and finished in 1892 by Prosper Bobin for the Compagnie
des Chemins de fer du Sud de la France. The station front is
rather monumental and impressive with a high front, with two
pavilions to the side. A tall trainshed covered the tracks that
went to Grasse and Puget-Théniers. Lines to Digne and
Annot opened in 1911. The rooftop was the pavillion of Russia
and Austria-Hungary of the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris.
  -
  - After World War II, the
line to Meyrargues closed and almost took the entire network
with it. The Chemins de Fer de Provence closed the Gare du Sud
in December 1991 and moved its terminating services to Nice CP.
Ownership of the station building was transferred from l'Etat
Français to Nice Municipality. Amidst public outcry, the
station was almost dismantled but public demonstrations saved
it. Work has finally started on the site, although it appears
that only the facade will be retained in the new civic complex,
containing the town hall, library etc.

  - Six Brissonneau and Lotz
locomotives were acquired in 1950. Of these, only T62 remains,
plus T66 acquired second hand from the Swiss CJ. Following the
rebuilding of ex-CJ driving trailer XR-1376, these locos are
used on peak period push-pull trains, also using ex-Swiss XR-1372.

  - Autorails - Trailers
  - RL-1
  to RL-7 (XR-1331 to XR-1337)
  -
  - When all passenger traffic
was transferred to the Renault autorails in the early 1950s,
some trains lacked capacity. Two Billard trailers (similar to
the Billard autorails later transferred from the Vivarais) were
bought in 1955. These were Billard design R210D2. They were numbered
  RL-1 and RL-2. A third vehicle, RL-3 was delivered in 1959. They
had 42 seats, and were frequently pulled by rebuilt Renaults
  ZZ-21 & ZZ-22 (ex-ZZ-1 & ZZ-2). Similar RL-4 & RL-5
were purchased from CFD du Tarn in 1964. RL-6 & RL-7 then
followed from the Vivarais in 1969. RL-1 and RL-5 received completely
new bodies in 1979, to be followed by RL-6 and RL-4. The heavier
new bodies caused problems with the original Billard bogies,
and RL-5 was rebuilt with new single axles, with RL-4 and RL-6
following. RL-1, alone amongst the rebodied trailers, retained
her Billard bogies, which were strengthened to prevent further
problems. RL-1 was renumbered XR-1331 and remains based in Nice
for strengthening certain peak period services. Of the un-rebodied
cars, RL-2 and RL-3 (later XR-1332 and XR-1333) had most of their
windows removed for use as parcels vehicles. RL-7 (later XR-1337)
then received a new parcels body in 1990, similar in shape to
  the rebodied passenger trailers.
