Page 1: Vaporetti
This is one of a series of pages devoted to postcards and photographs of Azienda del Consorzio Trasporti Veneziano (Actv), who run public transport in Venice. This page covers the famous vaporetti. A vaporetto is technically a small steamer, and although all have been motor vessels for many years, the name has been retained. Each vaporetto has an Actv fleet number on the port bow and starboard stern quarter, plus a Venice licence (VE) number on the starboard bow and port stern quarter. Vessels are listed below in Actv number order, but for some images I only have the VE number, these are listed at the bottom of each section. I am trying to discover the Actv fleet numbers for these images. Three main types of vaporetto are in general service,
Serie "80"
,
Serie "90"
and
Serie "100"
. Some earlier boats in the 66-73 number series still exist, but I believe they are mainly kept as reserves.
The waterborne fleet of Actv is composed of about 152 craft and approximately a hundred pontoon boarding points. In detail, the types of craft in the fleet are vaporetti (larger water buses - 58 units), motoscafi (smaller water buses - 49 units), motoscafi ad agente unico (single-agent water buses - 10 units), motobattelli foranei (offshore motor-boats - 15 units), motonavi (foot-passenger ferries for carrying large numbers of passengers - 13 units) and navi traghetto (car ferries for vehicle transportation - 7 units).

Series 66-73 (1955)
These boats were built in 1955, and only Actv 66 survived in 2007, having been resurveyed in April 2007. 70 was removed from the Italian register in 2004, 72 in 2005, and 69 was sold for scrap in December 2006. Other vessels in the series were withdrawn earlier.
